I really don't think people are taking this seriously enough.

I think that people can do very little about the situation in Chernobyl at the moment (if Russia refuses to cooperate on this) other than praying for west winds for the next weeks. So that radiation clouds go to Russia instead to us.
No matter how serious one takes it.
The atomic proof shelters in my province are all dismantled after the cold war. Not that I would want to sit in one of those for the rest of my live.

Patiently wait and see, that is all I can do IMHO.
And trying not to get too nervous.

Putin has surrounded himself with corrupt henchmen. It would not surprise me at all that the military budget has been skimmed by the criminals he put in charge of it. Leading to lack of training and maintenance as well as substandard parts and supplies.

That level of exaggeration is insane. The worst I've heard from credible sources is that Ukraine has some white power groups that aren't even really in charge even if they are nasty in their own right.

Lenin gathers workers and peasants from miles around and exhorts them to build more track. Stalin shoots the train crew when the train still doesn't move. Khrushchev rehabilitates the dead crew and orders the tracks behind the train ripped up and relaid in front.

Finally, Putin places a TV set with a picture of moving tracks in front of the train and says "of course the train is moving - see with your own eyes".

This is a problem, because as time goes by, the Russian population grows, and infrastructure crumbles, and the state becomes more expensive to maintain, and it all falls apart if they can't get some economic growth, from somewhere.

Russia's population is not growing currently, and is due to start falling in the near future. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the economic hardships it brought, birth rates have fallen below replacement. Once you reach the point where the older age groups dying off are larger than the newborns replacing them, the population will go down.

Being in the space industry, I've watched the decay of the Russian space program, to the point where they can barely build stuff any more, and their new rockets are failing often. Aerospace and defense are similar industries, with the same companies often doing both. So if what I see is a symptom of their wider defense industry, it is no wonder their war is going badly.

I understand the argument that sanctions hurt common Russian people a lot which is why they don't like them. ...but I still support the sanctions as a necessary evil.
