A few days ago, Georgy Zakrevsky, another head of a private military company, effectively called on Russians to get rid of the “Great” Putin (his modifier, not mine). When the guys with the guns start making fun of your greatness, it may be time to read the writing on the wall.

Zakrevsky’s appeal, which has supposedly been distributed widely among Russia’s military and civilian elites, can’t be dismissed as the unrepresentative grumbling of a disgruntled mercenary. Zakrevsky, like Prigozhin before him, represents Russia’s military class. If he’s unhappy and willing to risk his career — and possibly his life — by going public with his call for Putin’s removal, there must be many others who share his discontent. That may be why he hasn’t been arrested or killed — yet.

It may be time for the ancient Russian joke, probably told about Ivan the Terrible.

When Putin took office, he found two letters on his desk from Medvyedev, his predecessor. The first said, "Open this the first time you are in deep trouble." The second said, "Open this the second time you are in deep trouble."

Great trouble comes and Putin opens the first letter. It contains two words: "Blame me." He does, and it works out fine.

A few years later, great trouble comes again and Putin opens the second letter. That letter says, "Prepare two letters."

So the UK PM is in Washington today discussing (among other things I imagine) long range missiles (NATO) and Trudeau made this statement earlier. I don’t think he would say this without discussions with allies.

The official status about the Nordstream II blowup at the moment is that this was a covert operation done by Ukrainians "under the hood", meaning against direct order by Selensky. Some Ukrainians have also issued arrest warrants on their head. There's always been the other version floating around that it was a covert operation by the USA, which is heavily supported by Seymour Hersh. Hersh clearly stated it was done by the USA and nobody else.

Now people have found a Danish harbour master named John Anker Nielsen, who 4-5 days before the explosion rushed out to a rescue mission on sea. What he found was a small US navy group with some naval vessels having their transponders turned off, and the US Naval Commander told them to turn back.

NPR reported this morning that the troops were still stationed in Russia and that sending them into Ukraine could trigger an international crisis. It seems incredulous that everyone is calmly working through the misunderstanding of Russia stomping all over Ukraine but that WWIII will emerge from podunk North Korea becoming involved in the conflict. But then WWI cascaded out of a singular assignation because it tipped the delicate balance of power that hungry nations maintain.

ETA: it's really getting more fucked up the more I think about it. I mean, I get the logic of killing the archduke of Austria, but she was just riding along in the car and sitting next to him.
