I think there are two reasons why "wellness gurus" tend towards MAGA.
...
It's no accident that people like Alex Jones sell "alternative" remedies and supplements of all sorts. They know their audience and market very well.
I lost a dear personal friend who became a 'professional / certified' wellness huckster. Reiki, homeopathy, crystals, feng shui, you name it, she was an expert. Or on track to become one if she could only scrape together a few more bucks to help pay for a few more classes and certification (with your help of course!). Apparently it was more profitable & ego-validating than being a project manager / tech writer, so she switched career paths.
The madness was tolerable before it became full-time. Like one time she was out to dinner with friends, one of whom was a molecular biologist at a nearby university. The biologist made the huge mistake of asking our mystic friend "Why are you rotating your plate" (counter clockwise three times, in a very deliberate 'look at me I'm doing something significant!' kind of way). It turned into a lecture on how it was 'reversing the chirality of the sugar molecules so they won't be as fattening!!'. Frustrating and silly but cute. Then moments like that started turning into high pressure sales for whatever brand of Woo-woo was on the menu for the night, and she got brutally ghosted out of my circle of friends for it. She's probably still wondering "why we all turned on her for no reason!?"
Anyway...
I think the dynamo behind all the wellness / maga / conservative / pseudo-christian / men's rights / conspiracy / anti-vax / anti-evolution / anti-facts / xeno-phobic tribal loyalty B.S. is that it's all basically a psychological pyramid scheme. Inherently authoritarian and hierarchical. Cogs in it become representatives from "A special group of people whom have discovered THE TRUTH! And they genuinely -care- about others like them. You too, if you're worthy!" Promising to "bring you into a community where you'll reap huge benefit from nepotism, favoritism and preference, while benefiting from imposing discrimination, hardship and exploitation on all those nasty detractors and unwelcome undesirables or those who refused our invitation. All you need to do is buy into our special brand of trademarked bullshit and all these benefits can be yours!"
I would call it a form of social cancer, but I think humans naturally evolved to act like this. When hardship comes, people get selfish and cruel. It's easier to take from isolated people than those that are well connected. Cowards tend to gravitate more towards 'strong man' types for table scraps and to make themselves less of a target than the outsiders/detractors and lessors in their own hierarchical social fabric. Those occupying the top of the pyramid may come and go, but loyalty to the pyramid system itself keeps it going and rolls a new 'strong man' into the top position quickly enough.
People are so scared now that they're scrambling for higher ground in that 'social pyramid'. Climate change, over-population, opioids, a vanishing middle class, union-busting, de-regulation, vanishing benefits, vanishing job security, increasing health costs, taxes, inflation, 'lessor people getting equality and competing for jobs they don't deserve!'.... fears manufactured, exaggerated or legitimate and more... The more scared people get, the more they tie their fate to the stability of the pyramid... the more strength those higher up have to wield.
The cost is denialism, anything that doesn't support the pyramid is a threat that must be opposed or silenced through overwhelming words or force. And the promise is that you'll be able to force someone lower than you to take on your share of the costs and sacrifice associated with the risk of "Being Wrong".
All you need to do to defend your position or climb in the pyramid is to re-package the trademarked bullshit that flows down from the top, and dedicate your time to force feeding it to those below you, coercing agreement, punishing/shaming dissent or individualism. Marginalizing people with integrity or actual 'facts'. And if you can extort favors/gifts/loyalty out of those who acknowledge you as being their upstream connection in the social/influence/community fabric then it becomes profitable enough to get more serious about it.
