Also, I was struggling to figure out exactly why the town wanted to be rid of the cult so much. Was it because they were not paying taxes, or were they squatting at the school house without paying the owner? Just curious ...

If I recall correctly, in the US, many replica firearms are simply real guns that had some essential parts removed or altered to make them non-functional.

I think this is what's meant by "imitation firearms" in this context. It's a bit misleading, but if someone commits a crime using something like a starting pistol to threaten his victim, it'll be described as an "imitation firearm" on the indictment, or at least in the UK it would be.
