Maybe it's just me, but since Jan 6... I'm hearing/seeing the word 'Freedom!' -much- less often from the right.

Even their foot soldiers have become aware that it's not what they stand for. This leaked ruling is just a taste, things are going to get a lot more tyrannical and oppressive very quickly. The left doesn't have the foreign/corporate wealth to turn it around, stop it or even slow it down.

So, this -will- screw the gop in the midterms - unless they just don't pretend to count votes.

Roe v Wade was supposed to be how they got moderate catholics to vote for them [this from my mom, who also added that since they weren't really going to do it, and because they don't care about life otherwise anyways]

But here is the thing, its more likely this will fragment the US into chunks - lots of them. I foresee city states surrounded by rural areas, if the GOP takes more seats instead of losing.

I guess I've gotten better at filtering them out. :|
There was a few trucks and some other vehicles which drove around DC for a few weeks yelling about "FREEDOM!" at residents, who mostly boo'd them. They haven't shut up about it. They just make sure they're only talking about THEIR freedom to treat anyone they see as "less than" (AKA women, queer, gay, black, brown, asian, desperately poor, children) however they want.

Overlooking that in the History of this country, a Constitutional Right has never been taken away. Until now. Or, about to be, I should say.

Right now California is the state with the strongest reproductive-health access rights in the country, and there is a highly robust charity in the state called Access RJ which helps women both inside and outside California to access health care there, including helping with and arranging transportation and lodging. If you were looking for an org to support out of this mess I recommend that one, if there isn't a more local one you can support. I only caution you to avoid supporting start-ups at this point because there are established and strong organizations already existing, and with Roe overturned the environment is ripe for scams.

But getting women access to abortion is just one part of the problem. A lot of the more recent state bans that have already been passed, swing the pendulum the other way by not only outlawing abortion itself, but criminalize even helping a woman, in very broad terms, to get an abortion. That means driving them to an out-of-state clinic or providing them with medicine, but it COULD also mean things like....donating to a reproductive-rights organization if you live in one of these states, or like, giving the Access RJ website URL to a woman in such a state who is considering an abortion, depending on how badly the local or state prosecutor wants to pander for votes. And these things are also high-class felonies too, which means that other states cannot refuse to honor extradition orders, for instance. Things are going to get horrible.

nice read. But I think it's worth pointing out that the bible doesn't really ban abortion either. I could cherry pick any conclusion I want out of the Torah or Bible since neither set of authors ever mention abortion.

The Catholic Church’s current position on abortion is 144 years old. In the 1869 document Apostolicae Sedis, Pope Pius IX declared the penalty of excommunication for abortions at any stage of pregnancy. Up to then Catholic teaching was that no homicide was involved if abortion took place before the foetus was infused with a soul, known as “ensoulment”.

This was believed to occur at “quickening”, when the mother detected the child move for the first time in her womb. It indicated a separate consciousness.

In 1591, Pope Gregory XIV determined it took place at 166 days of pregnancy, almost 24 weeks. That is the current legal limit for abortion in the UK. It was Catholic Church teaching until 1869.
Among those who held a different view on abortion to that of the Catholic Church now are some of its most eminent thinkers.

These include at least three of the 33 Catholic Church “super saints” – Jerome, Augustine and Aquinas – all of them “Doctors of the Church”. Were one to follow the logic of some in the church today, they should be excommunicated.

Interesting article... but my point is that they have to really torture the bible to come to any of these conclusions, since the bible doesn't mention abortion. American conservative Baptists in particular are highly critical of the Catholic church for making up a lot of dogma that isn't bible based, but also believe in this rule that isn't in the bible.

I also found this interesting:

If it happens, and I believe it will, the suicide rate in the US will skyrocket.

I think this is his decades of traditional experience working against us.... if we don't ram this and basic voting rights legislation through, the midterms are a lot more likely to get ugly.

As will the death rate of women with ectopic pregnancies as well as those who resort to "back alley" abortions.

And I can't imagine the quality of life for unwanted children born from forced pregnancies will be all that great either.
