For over 200 years, tradition has Military staying out of politics. They are breaking a tradition at least as old as our country to not get involved.

But they also all swore an oath to defend our constitution, and right now, its been used to wipe the GOPs collective arses, trampled, crumpled up, spit on and set on fire. So, not surprised they are saying something. I'm not surprised that at least two of the highest ranking NCOs have said something [as in, the highest ranking Army and highest ranking AF NCOs], I'm not surprised that retired Generals are saying something.

The bigger shame is it took them this long to do so [but tradition and training and all that].
I was just in a meeting and someone made the comment who would have thought the military would be the first ones to stand up to it. I had to ask them to clarify what they meant.

That's exactly what the Daily Best is doing, before it gets around to the facts, and they can go sit on a tack for doing it, because a lot of people probably won't read that far.
A lot of houses on Long Island were built by Levitt & Sons - Wikipedia and people think they built the whole Island, I think. There were biased real estate agents who tilted the balance, too. Then things changed. It became illegal to discriminate who you sold or rented to ( Dump got sued for this).
My parents chose their house because it was near a Reform synagogue and a school district with a good reputation. They didn't care about their neighbors' skin colors, but I'm sure the bigots chose differently.
It just occurred to me that judging a place based on its history of decades ago is a lot like kids in school judging their peers in his things were in first grade (which happened to me, and it stinks).
The media (including the Daily Beast) would be best served in reporting on individuals and their actions. If there are real estate agents still selling selectively, they should go report on what they're doing now, but 50 years ago.
Economic inequality, that's something else. A lot of that happened later too. Way before I left my old neighborhood, it passed the point of our being able to afford moving in there. But as diverse as the neighborhood had become by that point, I don't think race had anything to do with it. Other areas, of course, have their own stories.
Fuck the Daily Beast for trying to make us sound like a monolithic bunch of bigots.
The video of the white residents counterprotesting suggests to me that it's actually a couple of extended families and their friends who are making all the fuss, and everyone else is probably thinking, "God, not them again!"

That's certainly how I would read it if it were filmed over here -- situations like that almost always involve only members of two or three extended families and their hangers on, and a good number of them are doubtless, for a variety of reasons, not unknown to the police.

.

You're probably right.
Those kind of people tend to think they speak for everyone else,

Actually, I'm not surprised. They've seen how little regard he really has for the troops, enlisted and officers alike.
Sure, the military has its share of MAGAts but a lot of them hate his guts and others are just fed up, or don't want to wait for the axe to fall.

Fargo police deputy chief is suspended for activities at protest

FARGO, N.D.–Fargo Police Deputy Chief Todd Osmundson has been suspended for one week without pay due to his actions during the George Floyd protest on Saturday, May 30.

Fargo Police Chief Dave Todd and Mayor Tim Mahoney met with Deputy Chief Osmundson to discuss the incident Thursday morning.

Chief Todd said, “This is a serious matter and we are dealing with it quickly. Having a sworn person–whether they are an officer in uniform or a member of my command team acting on their own–operating independent of operations planning is unacceptable and dangerous. Deputy Chief Osmundson has accepted full ownership of his actions.”

Deputy Chief Osmundson’s suspension is effective immediately.

The Fargo Police Department has not released details of the actions Deputy Chief Osmundson took during the protests. KVRR will update this story as more information becomes available.
The Fargo PD hasn't officially "released the details", but what happened is, the deputy chief changed into civilian clothes and infiltrated the crowd, and began shouting obscenities at the police.

If the guy in this photo holding up that sign is him, then good for him. And who knows, his 'brothers in blue' may have deserved tree obscenities. He'd know, weight he?

If you read the news story to which that link leads, you will find that

When interviewed by The Forum on Wednesday night, the 32-year-veteran of the department vehemently defended his decision to change into civilian clothes, don a mask and go undercover later in the day.

In particular, the deputy chief wanted to explain why he made the vulgar comment and was holding a beer can.

Osmundson said he was extremely concerned about long guns or assault rifles being used as the rioting was raging later into the night Saturday and that he spotted a vehicle with a large group around it about two blocks from the police line that was downtown on Broadway.

The group was singing, dancing and playing a rap song with the vulgar words, as well as drinking and smoking marijuana.

He said he wanted to check out a vehicle with out-of-state license plates to see if there were any guns in the open trunk or inside the vehicle. To avoid raising suspicion, he grabbed an empty beer can from the road to mix in with the group. As he was checking out the inside of the vehicle he said he did mouth the words "f--- the police" one time.

When asked how fellow officers knew that he said it, Osmundson said he told a few officers after he returned to the station later that night what he had done.

"I told them I was on the back line trying to protect them," he said. "I said I wanted to make sure that no long guns came out and took you and the other protesters out."

The deputy chief said his methods were similar to what he used when he was an undercover drug officer.

Yeah he didn't join the crowd to support the protest, he joined it so he could pretend to be part of it while "looking for guns"; i.e., excuses to arrest protesters.

It’s often the same in countries not considered authoritarian. It’s only been recently, with the help of phone cameras, that (some otherwise fine) people have noticed. Protesters have mostly always been portrayed as “extremist lefties” or anarchists or just out to cause trouble which made it easier for the police to have leeway in how they acted. In any case, that’s how it has been here in the past.

Thread: maltreatment in custody by police of protestors in both Houston and New York.

This is the way the police behave under authoritarian regimes.
I'd say the police have an authoritarian culture maintained via their unions.

Saw an interesting interview of a city councilman from Minneapolis last night on MSNBC. He voted to not give the local police department more money. After that, people in his district were harassed by work slowdowns.

Lived in a town years ago where the police union used the opposite tactic to force a pay raise. They enforced every little ordinance as strictly as possible. They got what they wanted.
