A Federal judge had a few harsh words for Columbus city police.

Chief U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley wrote, "some of the members of the Columbus Police Department had no regard for the rights secured by this bedrock principle of American democracy. This case is the sad tale of police officers, clothed with the awesome power of the state, run amok."

Marbley wrote police must not inflict pain to stop nonviolent protesters.
One of the people they maced is my Representative. Who happens to be African American.

Newark Police didn’t fire shots in 2020 due to reform
Crime has reportedly dropped in the city with police recovering nearly 500 illegal firearms from the street last year. Aqeela Sherills, head of the Newark Community Street Team, a group consisting of former offenders working to actively defuse violence in the city’s most violent areas, said “This is significant.”
I'm glad to see this getting widespread coverage... </sarcasm>

I have no idea why it's taken so long to come to trial, but it will be interesting to see what transpires in this case

This is how the prosecution put their case:

”They were confronted with a man who was clearly acting in a disturbed and erratic way. They were entitled to use reasonable force to defend themselves or to protect another.

“The prosecution do not criticise their conduct prior to the discharge of the third Taser cartridge.

“However, when the deployment of the third cartridge was completely effective, causing Dalian Atkinson to experience neuromuscular incapacitation and fall to the ground, the prosecution say it was not reasonable to continue to depress the Taser for 33 seconds.
“In kicking Dalian Atkinson in the head not once, but on two separate occasions, PC Monk was not, the prosecution say, acting in self-defence or in defence of another. He was no doubt angry that he had been put in fear by this man.

“He chose to take that anger out on Dalian Atkinson by kicking him in the head. PC Monk was an experienced police officer. His training had taught him and it is obvious that the head is a sensitive area. In kicking Dalian Atkinson to the head PC Monk can only have intended to cause really serious injury.”

These are the Blakely factors that Judge Cahill has come to the decision that were fulfilled beyond a reasonable doubt in the Chauvin case.

Hmm...this list and the npr article are at odds as to what was found.

There's a link to a download of Judge Cahill's order here:

What do you say is the discrepancy between the order and the reports of it? I don't see any.

Thanks. Well, the original one that I saw, the jpg didn't say anything about him having committed the act in the presence of a minor, in his capacity as a police officer and having had 3 co-participants. It only had a number of factors related to the brutality/cruelty of his act.

Of course, the NPR article is the one that I would trust and now the actual document. No idea where the person who posted that jpg got their info from.

Sometimes I feel like we take one step forward and then ten steps back.

Greene's car door is opened. A Taser goes off.
"OK, OK," Greene is heard saying. "I'm sorry. I'm scared. Officer, I'm scared. I'm your brother. I'm scared."
https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/22/us/minneapolis-doj-investigation-police-case-deaths/index.html
Moments before, an officer approached Greene's car, his weapon drawn: "Let me see your f**king hands m*therf**ker."
After being tased, Greene can be heard moaning while still on the ground and being put in handcuffs by one officer, while another officer kicks him several times.

An officer can be heard saying, "I've got blood all over me, I hope this guy ain't got f**king AIDS," as Greene continues to moan. At one point an officer drags Greene.

The Associated Press reports that Greene is left lying face down moaning for more than nine minutes while officers used sanitizer wipes to wash blood off their hands and faces. This is not in any of the video segments the AP has posted online.
If we don't stop this now, we, as a society, will facilitate the end to democracy in this country. We are half way there already. Seriously, change policy, train better and defund the fuckers. If you want to be SAFE then quit giving these bastards military toys, train them for community service (not urban warfare) and address mental illness and poverty within your communities.

Oh, and just get rid of the "war on drugs". It's worse than prohibition every was. Treat mental illness, poverty and addiction and most of the problems will go away without military intervention, which is basically what community police have become.
