Well, I did it.

On a whim, I fired up the name change process, put Maitimo in first name, and chose Resident as a last name. Just to convince myself that it would be long gone and I wouldn’t have to change my name at all because the last name I wanted (Nelyafinwe) will never be on the list, on account of being owned by the Tolkien Estate.

IT WAS AVAILABLE.

What the hell? How does a relatively well known name of seven letters not get picked by anyone in ten years???

I knew that if I waited and someone else took it, I would regret it for the rest of my life. So I am now $48 poorer and I have a new name. And it was worth every penny.

I have heard from 2 different sources that MP transactions are tied to SL name, and that if you change it at this point you'll lose the ability to get items you purchased redelivered. Is this true?

No, not true. I just tested it by asking for a redelivery of something I purchased last week and it came through immediately.

Does anyone know how someone else's name change might affect things like your Mute list, land Ban lists, Calling Cards, chat logs, and Profile notes? I think some functions operate by the ID key and would not be affected, but I don't know that all are.

Chat logs and profiles on your local computer work by name. Before the first time you log in rename the profle directory "kawarensanjojok resident" to "coyote littlepaws" (as appropriate). Any chat logs someone else has of you will need to be renamed or merged by them.

Calling cards/friends lists work by UUID (tested).

My banker alt script works by UUID because I predicted something like this would happen back in 2006.

those all should be fine, aside chat logs, scripted security orbs howerver might be affected , I though heard colour HUDs for one clothing store stopped working as the HUD only listens to original owner (in this case by name, not uuid)

I could think of a few if I had characters to go with them (Rumrunner for a pirate, for example) but right now either my main nor my alts have any RPs.

Mute lists, ban lists, friends lists and profile notes are carried over automatically. Chat logs - it will start a new folder in your directory tree with your new name, all the old chat logs remain in the old folder under your old name. Calling cards don't update but when you open it, it opens the correct profile.

Your viewer settings and teleport history don't carry over (but again they're preserved in your directory tree under the old name so you can just copy the files over). Saved windlight settings and saved stream urls are carried over - as they are between you and any of your alts.

You can get redeliveries of marketplace items purchased in your old name (I tried this just to test it). Caspervend redeliveries work too.

Yeah, names and scripts are odd. My account name breaks a lot of old radars and things like that. Anything that tries to cram Bubblesort Triskaidekaphobia into a button on a dialog box without trimming it first is gonna have a bad time. That's pretty rare, nowadays, but it used to be a more common issue.
