I got thrown out of a demon RP place with a Baphomet avatar. "No furries"
You have my sympathies... but that is kind of hilarious. I've been told my boobs were too big by dudes who had biceps bigger than said boobs... lol. It's just a total lack of self awareness.

OH! this is great... I was once told on a world building forum that my magic system wouldn't work in real physics! THEY ACTUALLY SAID THAT! Because apparently they thought... their system would?!

Of course they did... because they'd convinced themselves it would. It's a very peculiar blind-spot.
Take any fantasy (or SF) game/film/story and there will be someone whining about something being unrealistic... while forgetting about everything else.

I call shenanigans. People acting unrealistically is always a legitimate complaint. As are things that don't follow the previously established rules of the backstory. And for hard SF (which is admittedly practically unheard of in games and movies, I think "The Martian" may be the only hard SF movie ever) and for things like detective fantasy there are actual hard rules you shouldn't violate no matter what your backstory is.

2001? THX1138? Destination Moon? Logan's Run? Planet of the Apes? Those just were the first ones to come to mind, but there are others.

Or is there an unknown-to-me definition of "hard" sci-fi?

Well, yes. But even if the characters act in accordance with how they've been previously written*, and the story remains true to the established rules, there will be people who complain something is unrealistic/rule-breaking. People are like that.

* The number of stories I read where the protagonist does something totally out of character at the end of the story has been disappointing.

Hard SF doesn't invent new physics. 2001 would have passed if it left out the monolith and the stoner aliens, for example, and stuck with HAL's breakdown over conflicting commands. It had a good hard SF story inside it.

I'll give you THX-1138, so far as I remember it. The Wikipedia article on Destination Moon suggests it passes too. I seem to recall time travel in Planet of the Apes, and Logans Run is straight camp and Carousel is pure fantasy.

I guess there may be as many as half a dozen actual hard SF movies. It's stunningly rare.

What about

Gattaca

Moon

Children of Men

Hell, a movie like Marooned could be considered hard SF for its time (though it's been superseded by reality and Apollo 13... :hellokitty:)

The launch through the eye of the hurricane was pure bullshit.

So was the sandstorm at the beginning of The Martian, but I'm not denying it hard SF status because of that.
Even when it just came out, when I was a kid, that launch offended me. I've got 50 years of being crook at Marooned you're not going to talk me out of.

Andy Weir apologized for the sandstorm.

Did he take it out of recent editions of the book?

I don't think Ridley Scott apologized. But then I don't think he should.

He absolutely needs to apologize for the fucked up ending. It's way worse than the sandstorm.
