Please tell me there's a way to COPY an outfit, not just create a new folder full of links.

I would really like to make a safe copy of what I'm wearing so I can edit it WITHOUT breaking all the other outfits that use the same huds/body/head/hair/ears/tail, etc.

I've got like 30+ things on.

Do I really have to { Pick a link -> Show Original -> Copy -> Paste -> navigate back to the next link } x30+ ?
Because that really sucks. :(

ETA: I guess from the silence that I'm stuck with manually copying each individual attachment separately. *barf*
You can open multiple windows which makes it easier...unless you accidentally drop it in the wrong folder. Just remember what you're dragging & dropping, even say the name of it as you are doing so as there is no "undo drag & drop".

True, though I'm not sure that'd be much of a win. The links from other outfits would just point at the item in the new location, if I edit them, all the other outfits reflect the change. I suppose after consolidating the outfit into one folder it would be easier to copy'n'paste the whole thing at once... so maybe it would save a few clicks that way. Thanks! =)

The trick is to use copies INSTEAD of outfits. I have over 300 distinct avatars that I switch between from inventory and zero "outfits".

I was talking about outfits in the generic sense of "a folder with body parts, clothing and other attachments in it, regardless of where it's stored. I generally try to avoid the actual "My Outfits" folder because it seems to have some weird counter-intuitive special limitations. But stuff ends up in there anyways when I edit my body shape and try to save/exit from it.

I have no idea what's in my outfits folder, I've never looked there.

I sort my avatar parts and attire into folders and use the outfits for the base appearance.

Well, on my main, which I've had since 2005... I have one outfit that's linked to what I guess was the folder I was wearing when they introduced the feature. So I don't see what's wrong with just copying stuff from Worn to a folder to save an outfit.

Never said there's anything wrong with it. As Toni Braxton sings, just do what you need to do (for a very different reason, but I think it applies here).

Well other than the standard viewer not allowing copying from Worn.

R-click avatar and saving from "edit appearance" is what ends up updating folders under "my outfits". If you don't use it, no loss.

I was mostly inactive for years. I was neither aware of the changes to outfits nor committed to some previous way of editing what I wore. Edit appearance was there, I used it, and found out about links shortly after.

Links aren't bad. They are handy for keeping variations of outfits in sync when you change parts of them. It's just that there was also benefit to the old way outfits were managed and no graceful way to go back and forth between them as needed.

Works fine in Firestorm.

I can't imagine wanting to do this. My "outfits" vary radically in size and shape and almost always require adjusting *everything* to match.

Well, unlike you, I presume many residents gravitate towards a particular basline avatar from which they create numerous variations: Steampunk Ken, Cyberpunk Ken, 1990's GrungeBand Ken, Sexy-fun-time Ken.

Apparently one of the stronger benefits of outfit links is that if you're stuck with a no-copy bodypart, clothing or other attachment... you could include it in several outfits despite it being unique. (not that I'd ever waste L$ rewarding someone for marketing something as no-copy).

The old style "Save Appearance As" would rip the no-copy asset out of the previous folder and drop it into the new folder. Leaving the old version somewhat broken. I guess that and the problem with rampant dubiously unnecessary asset duplication that came with [Save As] pushed LL into switching to the concept of outfit links.

They could have just linked the no-copy assets only, leaving things working for everyone.

They don't seem to care about asset duplication or they would have implemented copy-on-write semantics on assets in general which would have a much bigger impact.

For all I know, they might very well be doing some of that copy-on-write stuff under the hood.

While they may not care much, they probably care some about inventory related performance problems. Huge inventories full of regular asset metadata take longer to load (or sync if they do that now) during login, or at least did last I checked. If they can encourage residents to instead rely more on light-weight link metadata instead, that probably helps to some degree.

They don't download all that much data for an asset, when you do anything with one that's when most of it comes down. I would be surprised if it's that much more than a link.
