60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley accuses Bari Weiss of ‘murdering’ show
Scott Pelley, a veteran 60 Minutes correspondent, called out CBS News management in a heated meeting on Monday morning, attacking the network’s decision on Thursday to fire the show’s executive producer, executive editor, and two fellow correspondents, Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, as part of a broader overhaul of the show, sources tell the Guardian.
During a meeting of the show’s staff and Nick Bilton, its newly appointed executive producer, along with the CBS News managing editor Charles Forelle, Pelley took direct aim at Bari Weiss, the network’s controversial editor-in-chief.

“She’s murdering 60 Minutes,” Pelley said, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. “She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.”
Forelle accused Pelley of being rude, and Pelley countered by saying that the network had been rude by the way it treated Tanya Simon, the show’s executive producer who was fired on Thursday.

Bilton conveyed to Pelley that he would not be “intimidated” by his remarks.

60 Minutes staff who were present for the meeting showed strong support for Pelley, giving him a standing ovation, sources said.
Maybe you should be intimidated, Nick.

US construction spending on data centers eclipses $50 billion
Spending on data-center construction in the US eclipsed $50 billion in April for the first time, according to Census Bureau figures published Monday.

Data centers now account for 2.3% of all US construction spending, according to the report, which provides annualized rates that are not adjusted for inflation. Private-sector outlays for data centers also outpaced public spending on transportation-related structures — a category that includes airport facilities, marine terminals and mass transit — for the first time.

Further proof they are working to destroy CBS News.

“This isn’t stunt casting,” a television industry insider told Radar Online.
lolololol.
“It’s strategy. Rogan opens a direct pipeline to the massive MAGA audience CBS has struggled to reach for years.”
Oh sure, the Fox News audience. This will finally get them to sit up in their death beds and change the channel.

The teenagers enlisted as agents of mayhem by Russia and Iran (Evernote link because FT paywall)

One late afternoon last September, a 17-year-old Dutch boy was just starting his homework in his family’s house in Rotterdam when there was a knock at the front door.

When his father opened it, eight police officers wearing balaclavas rushed past him and stormed upstairs to the boy’s bedroom. They were there to arrest the teenager on charges of rendering services to a foreign country.
The details that have emerged since have shocked both his family and Europe’s security community: the boy is accused of having been recruited by Russian agents on Telegram to spy on law enforcement organisations in The Hague using a “sniffer” device, which intercepts WiFi networks.

Through interviews with police and intelligence officials in six countries across Europe and the Middle East, the Financial Times has established that this 17-year-old is one of a growing number of teenagers who are being recruited online by hostile states for spying and sabotage.

The tactic first emerged in Ukraine, where teenagers have been recruited online for sabotage, espionage and to spread propaganda. Moscow has since sought underage foot soldiers west towards Poland, the Netherlands and the UK. Tehran, spotting an opportunity to accelerate operations against Iranian dissidents in Europe and sow chaos in Israel, was quick to follow suit.

“Hostile states are absolutely trying to target teenagers,” says Dominic Murphy, who stepped down six weeks ago as head of the London Metropolitan Police’s counterterrorism command, which oversees investigations into national security threats across England and Wales. “I was surprised by the scale of the challenge because it really seemed to come very suddenly, 18 months ago. I was then equally surprised by the volume of youngsters that were ready and willing to engage online . . . and how quickly this was moving to real-world activity.”

There is a scene in The Sopranos every fan remembers. Davey Scatino, a degenerate gambler, gets into Tony Soprano’s card game and can’t pay.

So Tony takes his sporting goods store and starts a bust-out.

Not in a hostile takeover. Not in a leveraged buyout. He simply moves in, runs up the credit lines, orders pallets of merchandise on the store’s account, sells it out the back door, and when the inventory is gone, and the vendors are screaming, and the name over the door means nothing anymore. Scatino torched what was left of his life and walks away from the ashes.
A “bust-out,” they call it. You drain the asset, you collect the insurance, you leave the husk. There are prettier, more genteel terms of art for it in private equity, but they’re all part of the same spectrum.

I have been thinking about Davey Scatino’s sporting goods store all week. Because that is what is happening to CBS News, and Bari Weiss is the one holding the gas can.

How a Starbucks marketing stunt spiralled into mass boycotts in South Korea

There was also a problem with a slogan the Starbuck campaign used: “thwack on the desk”. It echoed a notorious cover story used by police after the 1987 torture death of student activist Park Jong-chul. Authorities at the time initially claimed Park died because an officer had used his fist to “hit the desk with a thwack”.

Marketers chose the slogan after consulting an AI tool, looking for suggestions, Shinsegae Group said. It turned out some managers who approved the campaign never opened the email attachments showing the marketing material.

It sounds like it is possible someone maliciously did this on purpose. The parent company of Starbucks Korea is themselves south Korean. ... and the article mentioned how some far right folks over there intentionally like to mock that massacre. Still embarrassing none of the managers caught this in advance and stopped it. But from what I've heard of the far right over there, it does sound likely that this wasn't just incompetence on behalf of the marketer who came up with it.
