Ruben Gallego beats far-right Kari Lake to win Arizona Senate seat

There's a LITTLE good news out there!

The Democratic congressman Ruben Gallego has won the race for US Senate in Arizona, becoming the first Latino to represent the state in the Senate, beating out the far-right firebrand Kari Lake.

Gallego will replace the Democrat turned independent senator Kyrsten Sinema, who ran for office as a centrist and charted a way for Democrats to win statewide elections in the right-leaning state, but then consistently stood in the way of her party’s priorities in the Senate. She did not seek re-election.

While the presidential race polled neck and neck throughout the election, Gallego polled ahead of Lake by several points the entire campaign, an unlikely position for a progressive congressman trying to win a battleground state. Gallego also outperformed Lake in fundraising, giving him more local airtime and mailbox presence.

In the end, he edged out Lake with 50% of the vote to her 48%, while Trump easily beat Harris in the state.

I missed this news on Monday.

Revered abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who was the first woman to oversee an American military action during a time of war, was posthumously awarded the rank of general on Monday.

Dozens gathered on Veterans Day at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park in Maryland’s Dorcester County for a formal ceremony making Tubman a one-star brigadier general in the state’s National Guard.
Gov. Wes Moore called the occasion not just a great day for Tubman’s home state but for all of the U.S.

“Today, we celebrate a soldier and a person who earned the title of veteran,” Moore said. “Today we celebrate one of the greatest authors of the American story.”

I'm posting NY Post links now. Because what does it matter?

President-elect Donald Trump stunned political observers Tuesday night by nominating Fox News personality Pete Hegseth for secretary of defense.

“Pete has spent his entire life as a Warrior for the Troops, and for the Country,” Trump, 78, said in a statement. “Pete is tough, smart and a true believer in America First. With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice – Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down.”
Hegseth was a captain in the Army National Guard and served for a few years in Afghanistan and Iraq (and Guantanamo Bay!), so he must have tons of the experience needed for the job, right?

I'm looking forward to our new Fox News Government coming to power in 2025. We'll at least be laughing a lot while the nation burns.

Special counsel Jack Smith looking at stepping down before Trump takes office and is discussing how to end prosecutions
Special counsel Jack Smith intends to step down before President-elect Donald Trump takes office and is discussing the mechanics of winding down the federal prosecutions against him with Justice Department leadership, a DOJ official familiar with the discussions said.

Trump has threatened to fire Smith, but Smith expects to be gone before Trump takes office.

Somehow this did not happen in Florida:

4 arrested in California for allegedly staging bear attacks to receive insurance payouts

Those videos, all in the exact same location outside of a residence in the area, meant to show the bear entering the cars and crawling around. But "upon further scrutiny of the video, the investigation determined the bear was actually a person in a bear costume," the CDI release said.
Just to make it completely clear here, these guys, made these videos:

And then saw what they had made and were like, "Yep, mission accomplished" and actually sent them in to the insurer.

So apparently Republican member of the House of Representatives Lauren Boebert (you remember her, right? She was re-elected!) has decided to take on the title for craziest member of Congress.

During a hearing for a subcommittee of the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, Boebert questioned a group of experts who believe the Pentagon is hiding information from the public about UFOs, or UAPs (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) as they’re now called, and it went of the rails quickly, the New York Post reports.

In a clip currently going viral on X (formerly Twitter), the Colorado congresswoman asks the UAP experts about the existence of secret underwater alien bases. “Are there any accounts of UAPs emerging from or submerging into our waters which could indicate a base or presence between the ocean’s surface?” Boebert asked. One of the experts, journalist Michael Shellenberger, said he hadn’t heard about it. It’s good to know she’s focused on the important stuff.

Let her stay focused on shit like that. It'll keep her from doing any actual damage to the country.

There's a boom going on in America: Illiteracy is big time on the rise!

According to the National Illiteracy Institute it is so bad in the US that about 130 million adults are unable to read a simple story to their children.

21% of the adults are illiterate.

54% of the adults have a literacy below 6th grade.

States with highest illiteracy rates amongst children are Louisiana, Mississippi and New Mexico.

Not surprised at all by the first two. The third one though did catch me off guard.

  • Approximately 50% of Americans read so poorly that they are unable to perform simple tasks such as reading prescription drug labels
That's me but only because the type is so small I can't see the letters without strain and bright light.

Swiss chocolatier Lindt is being sued after tests revealed some of chocolates are of bad quality and contain excess lead and cadmium, despite the company regularly claiming in its marketing and packaging materials that it is "premium" chocolate "expertly crafted with the finest ingredients".

Lindt filed a motion for dismissal, arguing - not making this up - that the claims it makes in its marketing are obvious BS that no reasonable person would ever believe.

The judge denied Lindt's motion.

Lindt chocolate as always been an excellent rat poison.
