Has to be new. When I went to church (as a kid), I don't recall any celebration of Seder beyond the basic nods of recognition from the priest during sermon that another faith does something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

• Sioux leaders issued the hotel a trespass notice and are pushing Rapid City to pull its business license.

"We will no longer allow any Native American on property," Uhre wrote in a comment that was shared, and condemned, by the mayor of Rapid City, Steve Allender. Uhre also wrote that ranchers and travelers, presumably non-Native ones, would receive a special rate of $59 a night.

In an email chain obtained by South Dakota Public Broadcasting, Uhre wrote: "The problem is we do not know the nice ones from the bad Natives."

Not only was "We're Not Gonna Take It" not some kind of defense of traditional, conservative American values, but Dee Snider was actually subpoena'd to appear alongside other artists before a Congressional hearing into "porn rock" convened in 1985 because "We're Not Gonna Take It" was one of the "Filthy Fifteen", a list of songs that the newly formed "Parents Music Resource Center" determined to be such egregious examples of the attack on traditional, conservative American values by rock music that the group appealed to Congress to create a national rating system for music similar to the MPAA for movies, in order to keep children from being influenced by subversive, sexual, violent, and occult themes in popular music.

The famous "Parental Advisory" sticker was invented literally because "We're Not Gonna Take It" freaked out American conservatives that much.

One of the other artists who appeared at the hearings was John Denver, a country/folk, artist whose music was for the most part considered so inoffensive and tradition-evoking that everyone just naturally expected him to side with PMRC against the evil rockers, and he surprised everyone when he came right out and called the PMRC Nazis.

Dee was fucking brilliant. Showed up with wild hair, tight jeans and a tee shirt. Sat down and unfolded and smoothed out his prepared remarks. The committee was expecting him to be a push-over that they could point to in order to perpetuate the dumb/violent stereotype they had in their heads of rockers. Then he was an articulate speaker, a concerned parent, and a Christian who emphasized that Twisted Sister did not include the type of Satanic and misogynistic lyrics that the PRMC assumed they did. It really showed the danger of letting people who know nothing about music decide what is or isn't appropriate.

Exactly. The movie ratings system is a great example. The MPAA only has limited public guidelines for rating movies. Members are anonymous and un-accountable. Unlike in other countries, they do not include psychologists, educators, or other experts in child development to help determine what is appropriate for different stages in development. And as has been endlessly noted, American film ratings are more strict on sexuality than violence. And there is no literature to support their system of classification.

Parents are the worst possible people to include. They generalize assumptions based on their political and religious values and apply overprotective projections of their own children to the entire country.

There were BBS, gopher, and FTP servers WAY before the Internet!

I wouldn't be surprised at all if some people were still using/ressurecting them out of privacy concerns. You could even have a pretty decent underground network made up of TRS-80's, Amigas, and Radio Shack C-100's.

I, for one will be very happy when KMart finally expires. In 1972 Minneapolis made a deal with KMart to redevelop the Lake & Nicollet blocks which cut off traffic from South Minneapolis to north of Lake Street and it pretty much wrecked the local area as traffic that once traveled from South Minneapolis to Downtown took the freeways instead, leading to a blighted neighborhood. KMart corp said "We will never sell that store!", mocking city leaders who were trying to improve the area.

They finally sold a couple years ago. Hopefully the entire area will revitalize as a consequence.

Also: tacky & ugly. It's like everything they sell is destined for the "unsold" table at garage sales Sunday afternoons after everything has been picked through, and thrown out by widowed ladies who still have pink bathrooms, shag carpets, and 50 year old Harvest Gold refrigerators from the 70's".

I don't think people would end up resurrecting BBS for privacy because Telnet has gotta be the most open and unsecure way for computers to communicate.

Like, for a lark last year I played with an emulated modem for an emulated C64. The virtual modem ran in a console window and whenever the modem was "on", even before I'd connected to any actual BBS with it (there's a few that are up, I guess for fun or nostalgia or whatever), like every single letter I typed on the keyboard was just broadcasting directly over the modem, on its own line in the console.

That was emulated though. There was no telnet in the original bbs. It was dialup. I don't see how modern bbs software would help with privacy anyway.
