Google has fired its second AI researcher, Margaret Mitchell. There was little reason given for the dismissal according to Mitchell. Google declined to comment.

The company said Mitchell’s firing followed disciplinary recommendations by investigators and a review committee. It said her violations “included the exfiltration of confidential business-sensitive documents and private data of other employees”. The investigation began Jan. 19.

Google employee Alex Hanna said on Twitter the company was running a “smear campaign” against Mitchell and Gebru, with whom she worked closely. Google declined to comment on Hanna’s remarks.

Google has been fired as sponsor by an ethical AI conference ACM-FaccT 2021 due to the events around their two ethical AI researchers of the last weeks. They are welcome to apply next year.

You might find Caste, by Isabel Wilkerson, of interest

Comparing Race to Caste Is an Interesting Idea, But There Are Crucial Differences Between Both

The puzzle that I and many others would have loved to see Wilkerson tackle is hardly touched on. And that puzzle is why some constructions acquire the sort of durability that resists all counter-evidence, all discovery, all qualification, all falsification, while others are as fragile as a flower and as quick to disappear as a rainstorm. Caste and race are monsters of resilience, and for this we need some third point of leverage for a truly powerful explanation.
Well ... maybe they are two ways that people manipulate feelings of disgust, with its attendant fears of contamination, for attaining some social goal. The goal (or goals) may vary over time even as the learned habits of disgust basically remain the same.

Old news and busted: Chinese copying all type of Western stuff and military hardware.

Hot news: The US Airforce reverse engineering their own bomber hardware in order to get spare parts.

Yes, you got that right. Finally some of the more obscure but very much reliable parts of the B2 bombers, which were commissioned in 1997, do need replacements. Due to unknown reasons either the original plans are gone, nobody knows how to build that stuff any longer or the manufacturing processes with the necessary tooling have been dismantled. Anyway Northrup Grumman seems to be unable to deliver some of the necessary spare parts for these bombers.

So now the US Airforce needs to get that stuff reverse engineered in order to have some new, shiny spare parts.

For example this lovely thingy needs to be rebuild:

This engineering effort is to reverse engineer the core of the B‐2 Load Heat Exchangers, develop disassembly process to remove defective cores, develop a stacking, vacuum brazing, and welding process to manufacture new heat exchanger cores and to develop a welding process to install the new cores on existing B‐2 Load Heat Exchangers. The requirement includes reverse-engineering the re‐core process for the B‐2 Load Heat Exchangers. The B‐2 Load Heat Exchanger (NSN 1660‐01‐350‐8209FW) uses air and Ethylene Glycol Water (EGW) liquid to produce cold air for the cooling system.

The deliverables will include all technical data related to the heat exchanger disassembly, all technical data related to the cores, all technical data related to the stack up, vacuum brazing, and installation of the cores on existing units. The deliverables will also include all technical data related to the tooling needed for disassembly, core stack up, core vacuum brazing, post braze processing, core installation. Two (2) government B‐2 Sink Heat Exchangers will be provided as government-furnished property (GFP) to prototype this effort. The two (2) prototype units will be delivered at the completion of the contract to return the GFP. The final design shall meet the testing qualifications specified in the government technical orders (TO). Finally, a qualified source of repair shall be provided that is capable of remanufacturing the B‐2 Load Heat Exchangers per the aforementioned deliverables.

South Carolina is moving towards re-introducing the firing squad as a method of carrying out the death penalty.

I'm completely against the death penalty, but I can get behind this. What better way to show people how bad the death penalty is than to show a montage of gruesome, bloody firing squad executions? The more gruesome the death penalty is, the faster we can get rid of it.
