I feel so awful whenever this kind of thing happens.
You always see "good-ending" proposals where even if it's a surprise it's clearly something both want and are ready for and maybe have even been waiting for, and they're so happy that it doesn't even matter if a crowd is watching. I love seeing those moments. But then you have situations like this where it's very one-sided, and the receiving party is made to feel awkward and put on-the-spot and has to reject them in front of thousands of people. It makes you wonder...did these two ever even talk about marriage before that day? I feel like if they had, even once, he would have known she wasn't ready for it.
I understand wanting to "surprise" someone but something this important can't be a 100% surprise thing where you never even say the M word ever until the moment you pull out a ring, it just can't.
