Just watched it. Not what I was expecting. Based on a book based on real life events. Some mixed-bagginess in the telling, but if you like films about close friends and in need of a cry - or three - it's sorta worth it.

It got me thinking a bit.

Could say, his fellow 70s show cast members sue someone for damages? Because it feels like his bad rep may affect anybsort of residuals as people avoid the show.

Same for well, lots of other shows. Like say, Roseanne.

It won't affect me watching That 70's Show. The fact that the actor turned out to be a piece of shit IRL doesn't affect the fact that it's a fun show. Plus, Jackie and Kelso wrote letters to the judge in support of him - which they're now all sorry about. *rolls eyes*

Finished work, finished dinner, and switched on Netflix to watch, or rather rewatch though it's been some time since I saw it last...Field of Dreams.

What a beautiful, wonderfully paced, competently written and well acted little American fairy tale of a movie it is. Why can't we get more of these kind of films these days? And I don't mean a remake!

Watched The Turning last night, based on Henry James' Turn of the Screw, and a remake of The Innocents starring Deborah Kerr. Part of me enjoys watching remakes in a sense of comparison while another part appreciates the film for its own world building or lack thereof. It was better overall, I thought, until the end. The end was...no...it was...umm...no. Now I have to like the Kerr version best and that hasn't happened since Quo Vadis. Finn Wolfhard is a good actor; I'd only seen him in the Ghostbuster movie.

Another of those American fairy tale movies, if a bit off and some might consider creepy. A fairy tale for kids who prefer to be scared by their stories. It, along with perhaps Beetlejuice which came out a few years earlier represents, I think, Tim Burton at his most creative.

Writers Guild and studios reach tentative deal, potentially ending a monthslong strike that ground Hollywood to a halt

The major film and television studios and striking writers reached a tentative agreement on Sunday after days of marathon negotiating sessions, the Writers Guild of America said Sunday evening, paving a path forward to end the historic work stoppage that has frozen production and paralyzed much of Hollywood.

“What we have won in this contract – most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd – is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days,” the WGA said in an email to members on Sunday. “It is the leverage generated by your strike, in concert with the extraordinary support of our union siblings, that finally brought the companies back to the table to make a deal.”

The terms of the agreement were not immediately known.

There is a movie called The Blue Caftan made last year featured on the Criterion Channel this month. It takes place in Morocco. There are three main characters, a man and his wife whose business it is to sew embroidery and make caftans ( a long, flowing silky dress with meticulous sewing). The third person in the story is a younger man very adept at learning the trade from them. The story revolves around their business and the relationships among them. The three of them are all deeply loving people, though not without some imperfections.

I will say the movie was a bit heartbreaking to me. I won't say why exactly because that would be a spoiler for the movie. The reason it was heartbreaking though was my love Annie died last January. She was in hospice care. The hospice worker understood how much Annie loved clothing and fashion and encouraged me to find some nice clothing for her before they took her away. I did, and that was the last I saw her body. Thank you hospice worker and I wish you peace Annie.

A film about OceanGate’s failed Titan submersible is already in the works

It’s only been months since the implosion of OceanGate’s Titan tourist submersible, but Hollywood producers are already working on a film based on the incident. MindRiot Entertainment will make the film, with E. Brian Dobbins (The Blackening, Black-ish) serving as co-producer, according to a report from Deadline.

The movie will follow the events that took place before, during, and after the Titan’s implosion, Deadline reports. In June, the Titan submersible set off on a journey to tour the wreckage of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. After losing contact with the surface, the US Coast Guard found that the Titan experienced a “catastrophic implosion” on the way down, killing all five passengers on board, including the CEO of OceanGate, Stockton Rush.

Nah, they get down there and they find the necklace, but they can't retrieve it and the someone is like, "Where's the Waldos????"

And maybe that person is wearing a red and white striped sailor uniform.

Maybe for the movie, that's part of how it collapsed, because someone tries to open the hatch and just grab it.

I like the Criterion Channel a lot. They show classics, foreign and eclectic films. They don't have much on their web pages in terms of ways to actually find good films to watch though. It is really pretty awful. They have a link to view All Films. It doesn't even have a description for the films on that page though. For that I need to click on the title where I get part of the description, then click More to read the rest, then click back to return to the list. That just won't do.

I wrote a screenscraper program to make a web page that condenses all of that information onto one page. There are two images below. The first is what they display. The second is what I show. I don't know if there are other Criterion fans here on VVO but I'm curious what you think.

Agnes Varda was a French director and screenwriter. The Criterion channel has a miniseries she made in 2011 where she travels the world to see artistic creations she loves. Just seven minutes into episode one she visits Chris Marker. He is a French writer, photographer, and documentary film director who created his own area in Second Life. I clipped that three minute scene here.

Sometimes I find a great movie that's nearly unheard of. Such is Angela from 1995. It's on the Criterion Channel. Most of their films aren't anything I'm interested in but gems like this show up.

Angela is a 10 year old girl, with a sister two years younger, a mother who one might say has a problem with reality as we know it, and a father who is basically a good hearted normal blue collar sort of guy who has troubles understanding the situations going on around him. Angela, who has had her view of the world shaped by what she has seen in her life, as we all do, tackles her issues as she knows how. I don't want to spoil things so can't say too much but her realities, her mother's realities, her sister's realities are not the usual for most of us. It is hard to describe but that is what the movie is all about.
