We already have a new political party. It's MAGA, and it's cannibalized the so-called 'conservatives' who were fed up with typical Republicans, so they launched an invasion of the body snatchers and primaried all the old school republicans that didn't bend to the new regime.

Would be nice... but I think it might be just as likely for the current GOP to be split into two if Elon makes good on his threat to start a new political party.

I agree the outlook is gloomy no matter what, but anything is better than having the GOP so united behind Trump.

Ross Peroit had the largest third party vote in US history (not counting the 1856 and 1860 elections when the two party system was broken by sectional division). He drew more from conservatives ensuring Clinton's election. His party faded after two elections.

To me, this is the ideal solution. It still relies on disgruntled Republicans crossing the aisle. That may be harder than we think, but it's certainly very possible since Trump has basically demonstrated in full public view that nothing he's said has ever been true.

I think that is way over optimistic sadly. What old school republicans? All of them save one or two (hopefully enough to fail trump's big horrible bill) are in lockstep with trump's wishes. The liberal left? I was reading an article in The Nation about Bernie Sanders that mentioned 1/3 of congress's democrats are in the "progressive" wing. That isn't enough. I think the only thing that will save us at this point is something happens where change has to occur. What that might be I have no idea, and that is scary but time marches on and we shall see.

I agree... though a lot of right wing media really has convinced half the country that the democratic party is very far to the left of where it actually is. I even know a lot of people with mostly liberal positions who vote republican because they swallowed so much of that propaganda.
