She printed out EVERYTHING.
Sounds like a community college president I worked for back in the very early 1990's. He had to have *everything* printed for him. He dictated his replies to his secretary who had to write then down and then type them in later. He often (and loudly) shared his belief that anyone making more than $30k a year was paid too much to be "wasting their time typing on a keyboard".

That incompetent senile old jack-ass would also make room for his massive Lincoln Continental by bashing his car into both the car behind him and in front of him every time he parallel parked.

The whole workplace was pretty toxic. Bad enough that I was finally willing to relocate for a better job... And within 6 months, I found a great one in San Diego and have been here ever since. :)

My computer went kafloogie a few weeks ago during an update. Somehow it froze up and didn't complete. Don't ask me how it happened because no drive errors were reported and the OS (Fedora Linux) is on an SSD! When I tried to reboot it failed giving me a fuckton of errors about nmb and d-bus services not being able to start.

I did the usual trick of booting into single user mode, which worked, but when I tried to bring up network there to rollback the update it failed. Nothing I tried worked. Well then I decided to just try rescue mode, which didn't start up. I got frustrated and basically let it go until I had more time. Last week I tried to use a Fedora 35 live disc to reinstall, but the damn thing wouldn't boot from DVD! I went into the bios to change it and for some reason a password was set. (It probably got set without me realizing it when I enabled the TPM module to see what TPM support I had some months back) So then I had to google how to reset THAT, which again had to wait till I had the time and brainpower to devote to it, which was today.

So yeah, all I had to do for that was remove a jumper, change the boot order, reinstall and I is back on the computer instead of my tablet. Didn't lose any personal stuff because that's all on a separate partition and all I had to do was tell the installer to not format it. Though I am currently suffering under the travesty that is gnome 3 and Ill have to re-install XFCE and the necessary prerequisites to install Firestorm because I've been out of SL for weeks! WEEKS!

Don't worry, my tier on my Caledon parcel was paid up for the max allowed, though Des might be wondering why I haven't added to it. (I do that on Tuesdays, once a week.)

If you ever had to build an RPM you would never use a Red-Hat derived system ever again.
While I generally prefer the "Redhatty way", I have built an rpm or two in the past. It's been a few years, I'd have to google how. I followed a "recipe" and the process was annoying and I intend on not ever doing it again.

At one point I had to write a script to manually unpack an RPM, add additional data, and pack it back up again.

Sounds about right. Hell, there might be a feature of the rpmbuilding system that will do that for you, but considering how obtuse the documentation was.
It exploded my poor decrepit fashionista brain.

Reading this Redhat talk got me thinking that I think either Redhat or Debian was the first Linux I ever tried. I think I tried Debian but could not get it to install and Redhat was the first I ever used.

Turns out I have a book for it, Redhat Linux 9. Which funny enough recently came out... Again... So I guess my 20 year old book is useful again. Though I imagine "Redhat 9" is different than "Redhat Enterprise 9"

The file format of RPMs started out bad and has accumulated layers of evil so thick you can smell them. And they added most of the tools for manipulating them too late for me.

I disagree, I would bet that every single link on that page is to exactly the kind of site he is talking about.

The descriptions below each link makes it look like these links are just a list of steps; but that is essentially clickbait. The steps are incomplete; to read the whole procedure you have to click the link, and it's when you do that that you are confronted by the auto-generated paragraphs of fluff that are designed to fill out the page so more ads can be displayed on it, which is the real point of the sites, and the procedure is waaaaay down the page.

His example was based specifically on the softwarekeep link, but they're all generally like that.

I don't see that is the case at all with the softwarekeep site. It has a bunch of pictures and instructions of their methods.

Edit: One thing I didn't notice at first since I use Ublock Origin which blocks it is they have an annoying popup over the article otherwise.

Here is an evernote link to the article. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Method #2: Use Microsoft Paint
This might seem like a silly way to determine your DPI, however, it works near perfectly. Since MS Paint comes with the ability to see the pixel your cursor is at, you’re able to do a little experiment to find a somewhat accurate measurement of your DPI.

  1. Open MS Paint by searching for it in your taskbar or your list of applications.
  2. Set your zoom level to 100%.
  3. Select any brush tool and place your cursor to the far left of the screen. In the bottom-left, the first number should show 0.
  4. Hold the left mouse button and move your mouse around 2-3 inches. Look at the first number in the bottom-left without moving your mouse and note it down.
  5. Repeat this process multiple times, then find the average of each measurement. This is your DPI.

The DPI of a mouse is the dots-per-second.

Hmm. At the very least, I can recommend avoiding that article.

They didn't used to be quite so wacky. I just bought a replacement battery for a 20 year old Powerbook and it just snapped in, no tools involved. Oh, I did need to twist a locking nut with the edge of a coin. So I guess I needed one tool.
