It happened because there was a bunch of people who were encouraged to use and buy computers over the years, who really should not have been.
And they all try and, of course, fail to use the website I admin, then write huffy emails to angrily denounce the "broken" site. "I have checked, and it seems you are unable to register as annoyingbastard@compuserve.com because there is already an account with that email address. It looks like you made that account a year ago/a month ago/an hour-and-a-half ago. I can send you a password reset link if you need it." "You are unable to reset your password because you do not have an account under this email address on this site. You may make an account by registering at this link ...."

They all find me. Every. Single. Blessed. One. :freakout:

I remember a couple of years ago, for like a two-month period there was a bizarre attempt by some people on the internet to create a wave of nostalgia for freaking bonzi buddy. The original invasive, infectious trojan app. Yeah, it didn't make any sense to me either; I wanted to grab some people and shake them. Luckily it never caught on as a thing.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 is evil, I sometimes have to deal with one at work. It is satan, and eats cartridges for breakfast. It sometimes likes to do some kind of weird printer-prep thing, for no reason at all. I wish it was a laser printer.

Blech, I've come to hate OfficeJets - on principle and in practice. The various series are like multiple plagues on business printing.

(I'm sure there've been a few that were...okay. But I've never been in contact with them.)

the planned MSRP is $220.
With a little searching can get a used HP z800 which is like the best tower case ever built WITH all the internals for less than that. Tool-less hotswap everything including the power supply.

Oh I know. My Corsair 4000D that has everything I need and I have no complaints about cost less than half that.

I just want a case that LOOKS like that.

Good because that turbo button changes the fan speed :) The originals changed the cpu speed so games didn't run too fast.

Naming that function turbo was all-time world class "marketing."

Yeah I guess you don't really need that nowadays, unless you're trying to play very old games. And if you're trying to do that, I think most DOS emulators or whatever will also emulate a slower CPU for you.

If you want a case that looks like that, I would suggest a '90s era Proliant.

Or spray paint. I'm sure someone makes that particular shade of .... beige? Ivory? If not, your friendly* local auto paint store can make a spray can of it.

* For certain values of friendly ...

As Linus points out here, it's not just one shade. 🎨

Yeah, my uncle had a case that looked like that with the turbo thingy on the front. I think his case was absurdly tall though.

This was in the 90s. I think it was like a 386 or somrthing inside. I lived with them for a bit around that time for college but I had a superior IBM Pentium 2 that had been a graduation present for college.

I'm a little ticked off that I'm expected to maintain an inetpub directory on my computer, thank you very much Microsoft.

I know, it's just an empty folder taking up less than a sliver of space for default allocation and metadata. But I'm anal when it comes to keeping the top level of my drives as minimal as possible. Just what needs to be there - and what I want to be there - and nothing more! I'm used to having to move or remove all the various directories filled with recovery files, updates, and the detritus from other such downloads. But now I have to leave something there with no purpose beyond its existence as a security kludge.

Ho hum.
