Meanwhile, the AI robots have taken over Amazon and turned it into something dumb as a bag of hammers.

I'm trying to open a seller account. The site won't let me do it. It, rather bafflingly, sends me to a 404. Or it demands I register -- then sends me to a 404. Or, when I tried to open an account with a different email but the same phone number --- because IT IS MY PHONE NUMBER, FFS -- it fraud shames me. I've been trying for three days, off and on, with all the usual tricks -- clear caches, use a different browser, try cutting everything but the URL; nothin'.

So I dropped 'em a note letting them know I couldn't open an account. (Note: Amazon seller accounts are completely different from Amazon customer accounts.)

I swear this is reply #1, copypasted ...

We understand that you are unable to login to your seller account. We completely understand how frustrating this could be and will certainly do our best to help you.

Kindly note that, we were unable to relate a selling account for the email address from which you sent your message,

We understand that people use multiple email addresses, but for account confidentiality reasons we cannot release account information to an email address other than the one associated with your Amazon account.

We request you to resend your message using that email address so that we may assist you better.


I very clearly and patiently explained that it would be highly unlikely they would "relate a selling account for the email address" as I don't have an account; that's the problem. (Okay that last phrase may have been in all caps.)

Reply #2:

Thank you for contacting us. My name is Tarun and it will be pleasure serving you today.

From your correspondence, we understand you are having issues with your selling account. We'll be happy to look into your request.

Thank you for choosing Amazon as a platform to grow your business, we feel honored to have you as a seller and we are more than glad to assist you with your case today.

Unfortunately, we were unable to relate a selling account for the email address from which you sent your message [*******@aol.com].

We understand that people use multiple email addresses, but for account confidentiality reasons we cannot release account information to an email address other than the one associated with your Amazon account.

Resend your message using that email address so that we may assist you better.

Just to follow up --- this never did get resolved. At one point I was including transcripts of old Firesign Theatre routines*, which garnered precisely the same reply.

For over 10 years, millions of emails associated with the US military have been getting sent to Mali, a West African country allied with Russia, due to a typo, according to a report from the Financial Times. Instead of appending the military’s .MIL domain to their recipient’s email address, people frequently type .ML, the country identifier for Mali, by mistake.

Johannes Zuurbier, a Dutch entrepreneur contracted to manage Mali’s domain, tells the Financial Times that this has been happening for over a decade despite his repeated attempts to warn the US government. When Zuurbier began noticing requests for nonexistent domains, like army.ml and navy.ml, he set up a system to catch these misdirected emails, which the Financial Times reports “was rapidly overwhelmed and stopped collecting messages.”

Not surprised.

I get a lot of misidrected email on one of my accounts that, unlike most, has a common word for the user part. Including bank details, big real estate transactions, insurance and HR paperwork, travel bookings and hotel confirmations, I could cause people so much trouble if I were inclined.
