Indeed. But the Brexiteers always are so serious about supporting this non-relevant part of the British economy, as if the whole UK's well-being is dependant solely on that. This is something I never understood.
It's partly that fishing, while only a small part of the economy, used to be until comparatively recently a very major part of particular local economies, so the decline of local fishing fleets has very badly affected these areas. Furthermore, there's no obvious reason why other industries or businesses would want to relocate there because, by definition, unless there's also a major commercial port nearby (e.g. Hull), a fishing port is a place at the end of a road somewhere rather than part of an active communications network.

As my late partner, who was from Hull, used to say, "You meet lots of people who were born in Hull and have left, but you very rarely meet anyone who's relocating there," and Hull still has an active port. Grimsby, just the other side of the Humber estuary from Hull, which also used to have a major fishing fleet, has suffered very badly.

So fishing ports, or what remains of them, are very much what would be called in the US "left behind areas" and tend to blame their misfortunes on distant bureaucrats in both London and Brussels, so the "take back control" message tended to resonate there.

One of the attractions of Brexit was that many parts of the UK outside London and the south east, and outside the major provincial cities, have suffered major economic difficulties as a result of the liberalisation of the world economy over the last 40 years, and successive governments have promised them help that's never really materialised. I'm from a major city in one of those areas and I've seen how, while the city's large and diverse economy has protected it, nearby towns and villages have really suffered since the 1980s and continue so to do (the local industry was coal, but it's the same problem as fishing).

Brexit purported to offer a way to turn back the clock to more prosperous times, as does Nigel Farage's Reform party now.

ETA: This post (which I think is free to read) is relevant:

To listen to the endless stream of words which flows from their mouths, you might think that not a single person in the fabled “Red Wall” has never nor will ever (i) go abroad (ii) go to university (iii) worked abroad (iv) had a latte. This is the laughable ersatz vision of working class Britain that deeply middle class illiberal metropolitan elites possess- a north of England which is at the end of the line and forever end of the pier. They expose their deep eccentricity as they obsess over the outrage of an agriculture agreement, whilst dismissing Britain’s potential re-accession to schemes such as Erasmus, or e-gates as “middle class obsessions”. They have nothing to say to the millions of ordinary people who travel to Europe every year, or who have family there. They have nothing to say to working class kids who actually need state support most to expand their horizons to other countries. They speak on behalf of a group of people about whom they largely have little conception, and who are convinced share the same abstract political neuroses as they. It speaks to a fundamental of British politics: both liberal and illiberal metropolitan elites are deeply unrepresentative of the public, and it’s only the liberal ones who know it.
As it happens, I'm in the middle of reading Hurrah For The Blackshirts!: Fascists and Fascism in Britain Between the Wars by Martin Pugh, and am struck by how Mosely and the Blackshirts were also very concerned about British farming and the British fishing fleet, partly because they were opposed to free trade and international trade agreements, favouring instead economic autarky, and partly because they saw farming and fishing as particularly authentic, pre-industrial, British economic activities.

Are they also mad about the wool trade and the importation of fine silk & fancy linen? Just trying to date them to a particular century out of curiosity.

Nope, Farage always rants about illegal immigration and the fishing industry. And most Brexiteers do copy that.

Running out of places to hide (not the U.S. though!).

Tate brothers face rape and trafficking charges in U.K.
British prosecutors have confirmed that Andrew and Tristan Tate face 21 criminal charges in total, that include rape, assault and human trafficking.

It's the first time that Britain's Crown Prosecution has revealed the detailed charges, that it first authorized last year after a police service in Bedfordshire -- north of London --- provided it with a file of allegations dating back to a period between 2012 and 2015.

The two British-American brothers will face the charges once they are extradited back to the U.K. from Romania, where they currently live, but their extradition is still pending because they are still involved in separate criminal proceedings in Romania. They involve allegations of having formed a criminal gang to exploit women.

ETA As far as I know, the Tate brothers were brought up in England, where they remained until they relocated to Romania. So while they've stacked up a long list of criminal charges in both countries, it's not clear they've yet had the opportunity to do much of interest to US prosecutors, unless the US claims extraterritorial jurisdiction for crimes such as sex trafficking committed by US citizens.

Though I imagine their financial affairs are probably of interest to the US tax authorities, come to think of it.

And Trump is fond of them. As he continues to out stage himself, this has a dismal sense of inevitability unless an agent or officer about to retire finds them first, and a judge throws a shroud of secrecy over everything.

Interesting turn of events.

The UK parliament has passed a bill introduced by former Labour leader and now independent MP Jeremy Corbyn, calling for a full public inquiry into Britain’s involvement in Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The bill, presented under the Ten-Minute Rule immediately after Prime Minister’s Questions, demands an independent investigation into the military, political, and economic support the UK has provided to Israel since October 2023.

Co-sponsored by 40 MPs across Labour, the Greens, SNP, Plaid Cymru, and independents, Corbyn's motion seeks transparency and the authority to question current and former ministers over the UK’s alleged complicity in "crimes against humanity".

While Ten-Minute Rule Bills rarely become law, this initiative forces both Labour frontbench and the government to publicly state their positions on the UK's role in supporting Israel’s offensive and sparks debate over Britain's legal obligations.
The bill's passage to debate was triggered when two Conservative MPs unusually shouted "no" during its introduction, forcing a full vote and recording every MP’s stance.

Though unlikely to become law, the vote serves as a key test of parliamentary sentiment on arms exports and the UK’s complicity in Israel's war on Gaza, which has been described by leading rights groups and experts as genocide.

No, they've not "passed a bill." Jeremy Corbyn was given leave, on a voice vote, to introduce a bill setting up a public inquiry on the subject. That's the last we'll hear of it.

Ten minute rule bills are a parliamentary convention that gives backbenchers the opportunity to speak for ten minutes to an audience of other MPs who support them about why parliament should consider passing a law about whatever it is. Then there's a voice vote where the the 10 or so people who've turned up to back them agree this should happen at an early date, and that's the last anyone hears about it unless the government wants the bill to proceed.

It's on a level with writing an op-ed in The Times or The Guardian.

You are, as usual, right about this This: "The UK parliament has passed a bill introduced by former Labour leader " is incorrect. He only introduced it, most likely realizing it will never pass.

However, if, as you say, "It's on a level with writing an op-ed in The Times or The Guardian." is also correct, remains to be seen.
