"Abstinence-only sex education" really means "absentee-only sex education"... because the only way kids will learn anything about it is if they're left alone with the internet for a while.

This is what really pisses me off about book banning, especially the current coordinated efforts.

Young adults DO NOT need to be shielded from every mention of sexuality. Book banning advocates speak of "the children" and lump 1st graders and middle/high school students in one broad category of "kids" They are not: the difference between a 1st grader and a 5th grader is profound. They are going through changes and they WILL find information about what is going on with their bodies. I want them to find that information in fiction and reference works that have been vetted by education professionals who actually know about development. Parents often want to "protect" their "kids" from material about sexuality in the naive belief that their kids are pure angels with no thoughts of anything "naughty." They will blessedly know everything as soon as they get married. But they are curious. If schools don't have information, they are getting it online. You have no idea what they are learning and who is providing that information. Or what else they are telling your children.

I am pretty sure that these types of people, don't want their kids learning anything. They want to do stupid shit like, tell little girls their period is punishment from God for impure thoughts or something. And they definitely don't want anyone learning about masturbation for sexual relief. Better to just be shamed all the time until you become an adult with weird pent up sexual issues. Sex is ONLY for productionnof new Christians and should not be enjoyed because enjoying anything ever is dirty and sinful!

Or the psychologically damaging comparison of girls to a stick of gum... or a shoe. "Who's going to want a used wad of gum or shoes that lots of other guys have put their stinky feet into?" I swear people pushing that rhetoric should be flagged as child predators or something, because there's all sorts of red flags sticking out of that kind of 'purity' obsession.

I can imagine there's a decent percentage of people (and kids), especially in a state like Florida, which don't have always on internet technology available to them at their whim.

phones are banned in most dictricts, yet we have mass shootings.. kids are "distracted" in class on the cell phones, but can't follow the lessons that are taught.... most of it stripped down to barebones due to crazy rules... parents are too busy to help at home.... teachers can't say anything without a permission slip and threat of their income and life.

and people are confused on how information starved children grasp onto the first thing they can get their hands on that teaches them more about themselves?

Before mom retired from teaching Kindergarden (in a school pretty much 30 minutes from the border with Mexico), she often had a few kids starting school that spoke no English at all. So she helped them and helped the gringos learn words in Spanish too, so that all the kids were engaged rather than just some. (she's fluent in Spanish)

She got told "That's not part of the curriculum." (for effing KINDERGARDEN ffs.) and that she better "Watch out."

I think her response was probably "Oh of course! Whatever you say. I'm just here to teach!" and she went right doing what she had been.
