I am pretty sure you can't move old Toots, unless they changed it

Embarassing that they suggest using Winrar or 7Zip to unpack a tarball, even "that OS" includes tar and gzip in their Linux subsystem these days.

I get WHY, but the crusade for alt-text on images on Mastodon kind of annoys me. Like, half the time, the post itself described what the images is, as much as its going to be described. Adding some generic "description" is really pointless. I am not going to write a blog post inside every image either.

I actually really hate that I have to keep 7zip around to open rar and 7z files.

Build that into the OS or just use zip files.

Later Mediaite updated the article .

UPDATE: This post has been updated to correct the original characterization of the Join Mastodon Twitter account as being the account of “John Mastodon,” who is not a person as far as we know. – ed.

Mastodon, an open-source microblogging site founded in 2016 by German software developer Eugen Rochko, has seen a surge in users since Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion in October amid concerns over the billionaire’s running of the social media platform.

Rochko told the Financial Times he had received offers from more than five US-based investors to invest “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in backing the product, following its fast growth.

But he said the platform’s non-profit status was “untouchable,” adding that Mastodon’s independence and the choice of moderation styles across its servers were part of its attraction.

Rochko doesn't have a product to sell. Mastodon is just one of many implementations of the protocol and not even the oldest. I'm not even sure he can even fork the repo and re-release it under a non-free license because he's not the sole copyright holder.

Mastodon is right now what maybe Usenet was in the past - before AOL happened. The thing is that the Usenet had no good tools available to moderate the new influx of people, but Mastodon has.

In my opinion, a better comparison would be to say that Mastodon is to social media what bittorrent was to file sharing after Napster imploded. IE - a correction.

Let's hope it takes the same way that Bittorrent took *raises a glass to twenty years of TPB*

I just wish the whole ActivityPub deal that is the backend of Mastodon wasn't so obtuse and weird. It seems like an amazing concept on paper but getting it to work makes Mastodon seem as easy to use as Facebook.

Usenet was simple and ran over dialup.

Simple until you try to glue together 30 uuencoded .tgz files and find out one is missing.
What were those patch files they included for Usenet warez called again? I still don't understand how thise work, but I imagine there is a video to explain it if I remebered what they were called.

Like, if one of those 30 files was missing you could fill in with these other files.
