As for Lemmy, you must not have a problem with the devs being tankies.

Oh wow. That kind of makes me wonder if maybe kbin started being developed because of that.

I mean, MOST if not all of the fediverse is developed by left-leaners generally, but yeah tankies are a bit much for me. The upside is that you don't have to use any of the dev-run Lemmy instances - like Mastodon servers, anyone can start one - but I can see some people being not-eager to have to interface with extremisty devs for tech support.

Still in for supporting kbin, though. It has a ways to go - but with what's happening with Reddit, what else can you do?

I'd support both, to be honest, unless it's a situation like raddit where their politics bleeds out into their policies and TOS.

If the devs want to run around LARPING whatever...who cares?

correction; I doubt I'd support both (who has that kind of time?). What I mean is that I wouldn't let the devs being tankies impact my decision on what I use.

Good news: There are Lemmy communities for Second Life (unofficial, of course) and, since a few hours ago, OpenSim.

Meta nee Facebook is in the middle of building a Twitter competitor called "Project 92". As a very bad surprise, it turns out that they want their app to be able to federate with Mastodon instances, and they have already made overtures towards the admins of several large servers, under NDAs. Offers evidently include "financial compensation" to admins of larger servers who agree to federate and allow Meta to scrape data and influence moderation policies.

This could be disastrous. Servers rely on donations to stay running and very few - probably none - could make more that way than what Meta could theoretically offer. Fediverse app makers would not be able to easily compete with Meta's resources, and slick new Meta fediverse apps could lure people over at the cost of surrendering all of their data and information as with all Meta apps.

I have seen at least one asmin saying they have no interest in this federation because Facebook's mission is basically entirely at odds with the Fediverse

I just read another news article about why mastodon didn’t make it and is dying. It’s very sad to hear and probably explains why I have to keep adding more server capacity to handle all the people quitting mastodon.

I am sure they will implement the good old Microsoft strategy of embrace, extend, extinguish. Just like they faded out Jabber after a while for their messenger.

For me the most impressive client is on the Apple II, since this is hardware from the 1970s.
