CNN reported on Wednesday night that Trump was dead set on granting interviews with Woodward, who was working on a book about Trump titled “Rage,” to boost his image, with the President reportedly relying on his experience as a salesman to present himself in a positive light.

White House aides “repeatedly” warned Trump against speaking to the dogged reporter, a source told CNN, but as usual, the President ignored their advice and acted on his own instincts instead.

Trump has a habit of confessing his sins. Sometimes it is with some expectation of privacy (Hollywood Access tape) and other times totally in public view (like admitting he fired Comey to obstruct justice).

I think he knows full well that he is not supposed to have done the things he admits to, but a) his psychopathic mentality just does not care and b) his narcisstic mentality likes the attention he derives from his confessions. I think the effect on his base is lower on the ladder--not as immediate--but I do get a sense of a "breaking bad" hysteria, as it were, that gets shared between Trump and his base.

I don't think Trump or his base cares much if the attacks are provoked or not. Attacks are just more dramatic material. Trying to spin them as unwarranted is a way of repeating the cycle. Yes, he's lying if he says they are unprovoked. No, he does not care that he's lying. Yes, he likes the attention generated by the ensuing uproar. Some in his base react in a thoughtless, hysterical manner.
