For a few weeks now I have been receiving two or three emails a day from JD Vance, House of Representatives speaker Mike Johnson and Donald J Trump himself – plus a few bit players like campaign managers. It seems that the MAGA fundraising machine is convinced that rather than being an investigative journalist from Europe, I am a Great Patriot from Maryland.

It is instructive to see how these daily computer-generated messages are organised. From official figures, about 30% of the funds raised for Trump’s various election campaigns come from “small dollar donations”, i.e. amounts less than $200, made by ordinary Americans whose lives and finances are very different from Elon Musk’s.

Judge Enjoliqué Lett concluded, reasonably enough, that his sweeping complaint that the BBC had allegedly injured his financial interests meant that he had to open his files.

She agreed that the BBC could subpoena the revocable trust that holds Trump’s assets, asking for financial documents about the value of some 400 businesses he’s connected to.

with admirable robustness, the BBC lawyers have asked for details about any intellectual property held by the trust, as well as “tangible personal property” such as “motor vehicles, jewellery, art, antiques collectibles” and, for good measure, “digital assets like cryptocurrency.”

Trump will drop the case rather than tolerate that. During the latest hearing, Trump’s legal team indicated that it would amend the complaint to focus on reputational damage rather than financial losses to his businesses. If it does, maybe his lawyers can overturn the ruling on appeal – particularly if they get a Trump-appointed judge to hear it.
