No I’m not coming back.

But occasionally I’m curious about what’s new or what’s happening in Second Life.

“Back in my day” there were some great blogs about events, fashion, photography, new gadgets etc. Plurk was also where a lot of news was shared. Flickr was a great resource for following people and finding new destinations.

What are some of the ways people share these days? Please don’t say official forums lol. I’m looking for resident driven content.

YouTube? X? Did TikTok ever find a space? There is a subreddit but it’s not that active for sharing news, it’s most asking questions. Any specific people that should be followed?

I am still very active in SL but can't tell you with a straight face I'm "with it" on the latest trends. I do a lot of shopping and pounce on cool new shit when I find it. I also am not shy about going to sims and asking people with great looks what they got etc.

There are also a few occasions where someone just told me I was doing something "out of date" and had a better recommendation. ...some of these recommendations were great, and others not so much.

EDIT: I should also mention that I've only upgraded mesh bodies on a handful of occasions over the years and only when it was clear my old approach was really not cutting it since it's VERY expensive in time and money to update that and the whole wardrobe! I also find hear many bad, unsolicited opinions on which bodies are older or "better."

I am off an on very active, currently very active, almost daily.

I don't really ever visit the official forums. I get some info here, I also get group notices in world on somethings.

I also follow several people in SL on Mastodon, and subscribe to maybe a dozen or so blogs via RSS, though I often never read read them and just mark the Second Life category read after a quick skim of the headlines. I have no interest in fasion blogs, and I don't know why I even subscribe.

I probably also am not very "hip" with the happenings. 90% of the time I am hanging out just redecorating my house, sometimes I go to Buidlers Brewery classes.

Use to be really active in SL trying almost everything looking for something I'm good at, but my time there has dwindled down to just about nothing. Most of the time if I hear about something new it's because someone here mentioned it, sometimes it's a recommended YouTube vid.

I do follow the official SL stuff on social media - Flickr, Instagram, Xitter, etc... Also, Inara Pey's blog is my fave for keeping up to date on stuff, and I am in the Black Dragon Discord which helps me find out a lot of technical stuff coming since the creator often talks about it.

The official blog is good for info too:

These days recurring sales are a big thing in SL.
Have a look at SeraphimSL.com it gives a good insight about what is going on. Best in the weekends, because than the big weekend sales are published.
Most of the sales have website pages with all the stuff on sale. So you don't even have to log in to see in what direction SL is heading.
Avatars and clothing go pretty extreme, furniture and housing is very detailed IMHO.

I was avidly following the VVO thread on the pros & cons of the new LaraX until I realized that it just doesn't matter for me. I wear men's clothes, none of which work well with a female mesh body. So I alpha out the majority of the body mesh, leaving only the arms and hands, maybe a little neck V, showing. There's little point in updating.

yeah, for your purpose it doesn't sound worth it at all. ...I sometimes get requests from horny dudes to "upgrade" to bigger bodies or bodies they (often wrongly) think are newer.... as if I was going to go through that immense amount of trouble right away for them! lol.

Points to what Cris and Sid said. That's basically me, plus in-world groups, chatting in local, and keeping my eyes and ears open in SL.

Pretty much did my own thing since the start and ignored everything else, so I can't really say I ever really stayed 'up to date' on anything other than, you know... scripting/particle stuff. :)
:qft:

I'm in just about every day now and I just bought some [more] new mainland land but I have no clue what new developments are happening in SL. My avatar is kind of old, literally and figuratively. 😁 I never focused that much on appearance. I just do my own thing and create my own worlds, with what ever inspires me at the moment. I will check out the blogs though because I do enjoy learning different things and I really would love to learn how to create mesh landscape items.

between VVO, SeraphimSL,Flickr and a few SL discords... any major community your into likely has a dedicated SL discord group if your a builder or shopper or your fetish.... any major LL announcement will go through servers like wildfire before i even see the official one. SL in world groups don't have the capacity and constantly fail and alot of customer support for stores/announcements goes to discord these days and it's fairly automated. it's easier to manage.

There is still alot of bloggers around but no where near it was a decade ago.

Discord is IRC for whippersnappers who don't know what IRC is. ;-)

Over the last few years, I have gradually degenerated into a Luddite for some reason. I used to work in IT, forgodsakes, and now I'm afraid to upgrade my PC without asking everybody, everywhere for help.

I still work in IT and I'm afraid to upgrade my PC. It's not a reflection on you, it's a reflection on the appalling state of the PC/IT industry.

Its annoying because everything has become .eaningless buzzword names.

So its not clear what is actually better.

Like before, "400mhz was better than 350mhz" and Pentium 4 was better than Pentium 3".

Now its all about clock speeds and memory and number of corses, often across every component it feels like.
