So reddit or youtube are not social media by your definition? You pick the discussion channels you like or you can like a creator but there are no friends lists or any way for someone to follow me as a non creator.

You can follow people on Reddit and YouTube.

Social media has the concept of followers and followings and friends, this is the foundation of it. Discussion is the foundation of a forum.

The first social media had nothing of that. What it had was people being social in discussion groups.

You can but it's not the main focus of the platforms. I use reddit and youtube all the time and I don't follow any person.

That's kind of my point. You can have a discussion group without being social (friends) but you can't really have a social group without discussion (talking). I discuss things with people all the time without socializing with them.

I mean, I've never been in a book club but what's the point of discussing the book with the group if you haven't read it? Cliff Notes don't count. lol

Maybe I'm just splitting hairs but to me there is a very noticeable difference between forums and social medias. While they both can serve the same purpose, they aren't the same thing.

I really don't think you can. People aren't wired that way. Even on reddit... where supposedly people aren't supposed to notice who they're talking to because they don't have avatars or permanent identities or any of those "social cues"... people associate with people they know. People are social. You have to work really hard to keep people from socializing, and even on forums like SpaceBattles where the mods will suspend and ban you for social chat in storyboards it's not 100% successful.

I never found a forum or discussion group so far, where regulars don't share more from time to time, than the actual subject where the forum or group was created for.
Threads go of topic because of that, forums have off topic sections for that etc.
So yeah, IMHO forums are a sort of social media.

I forget Reddit has avatars and profiles, because I use old.reddit and don't use the official mobile app, but at least once a week I get random compliments on my Avatar on my "main account". People notice them.

Huh. I've been doing it my whole life. Reddit does have avatars. I don't think you can change your user name. Not easily. I have yet to see anyone really being social on Reddit.

It's not hard to keep people from socializing. Especially if you start them young like my family did. I don't think you'll ever be able to understand what I'm saying without ever having been isolated (except for school) the first 18 years of your life. People seem to find it quite easy to exclude me from socializing.

Never heard of SpaceBattles. If the rules say no social chat in storyboards and people are socially chatting, they're breaking the rules so that's not an analogy that will work on me.
