Twitter outage: Elon Musk says ‘works for me’ as users report problems with website
The technical failure comes after mass layoffs at the tech firm following its takeover by Elon Muskwww.theguardian.com
Elon Musk’s orders were clear: Close the data center.
Early on Christmas Eve, members of the billionaire’s staff flew to Sacramento — the site of one of Twitter’s three main computing storage facilities — to disconnect servers that had kept the social network running smoothly. Some employees were worried that losing those servers could cause problems, but saving money was the priority, according to two people who were familiar with the move but not authorized to talk about it.
The data center shutdown was one of many drastic steps Musk has undertaken to stabilize Twitter’s finances. Over the past few weeks, Twitter had stopped paying millions of dollars in rent and services, and Musk had told his subordinates to renegotiate those agreements or simply end them. The company has stopped paying rent at its Seattle office, leading it to face eviction, two people familiar with the matter said. Janitorial and security services have been cut, and in some cases employees have resorted to bringing their own toilet paper to the office.
Last week, Twitter got rid of the cleaning staff at its New York offices and 10 people from corporate security, signaling that it may close one of its two buildings there, two people familiar with the move said.
At Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, where the company has missed rent payments, Musk has done the same, consolidating workers onto two floors and closing four. He also canceled janitorial services this month, after those workers went on strike for better wages.
That has left the office in disarray. With people packed into more confined spaces, the smell of leftover takeout food and body odor has lingered on the floors, according to four current and former employees. Bathrooms have grown dirty, these people said. And because janitorial services have largely been ended, some workers have resorted to bringing their own rolls of toilet paper from home.
What is with these ultra-rich guys refusing to pay their bills? They certainly have more than enough money to handle them so it's not really a matter of the same reasons that poor people find themselves unable to pay a bill. Is it because they get away with it? Is it an ego thing? I just don't understand it.![]()
What’s gone at Twitter? A data center, janitors, some toilet paper
Elon Musk has reduced the company to a bare-bones operation, and employees are under a “zero-based budgeting” mandate to justify any spending.www.seattletimes.com
When I chose the rename on this thread, I didn't realize how accurate it was going to be.

Oh hey, Stephenson wrote about this in Snow Crash.employees have resorted to bringing their own toilet paper to the office
He also wrote about a virtual reality people really wanted to spend time in. Which is why we all thought it was a work of fiction.Oh hey, Stephenson wrote about this in Snow Crash.
The problem is that the stable genius which is Elon Musk at the moment has not enough money. I mean he paid three times the price which Twitter was probably worth at that time, namely 44.000.000.000 US$. To have this amount of cash he had to lend a lot of money and sell tons of Tesla stock. As a result Musk now has to pay 1.300.000.000 US$ per year alone in interests for those credits, which means he is really desperate to create big profits with it which it does not at the moment because of his chaotic interferences with it.What is with these ultra-rich guys refusing to pay their bills? You are telling me that he doesn't have enough money to pay the rent on the building? As of December 23, 2022 he had a net worth of $139 billion. The problem is that the stable genius which is Elon Musk at the moment has not enough money. A backer of Elon Musk’s $44 billion takeover of Twitter has cut its valuation of the social network by more than half.
Fidelity, which owns shares in the business via its Contrafund, estimates that its stake is worth $23.5 million, down from more than $53 million only two months ago. Its carrying value for the micro-blogging service for X Holdings I, Inc — Musk’s holding company for Twitter — fell by 56 per cent from October to the end of last month, according to a new filing.
yeah, but I bet he's very "cash poor." all his money is in assets and it would look really bad if he dumped a bunch more tesla stock to supplement twitter melting down. You are telling me that he doesn't have enough money to pay the rent on the building? Sure, I agree and pretty much anticipated such a response. I still can't find it in myself to think that someone valued at over $139 billion dollars would have any problem getting some cash on hand to pay rent. There's more going on there. That's what I was hinting at: it's like they have become so arrogant, babied, irresponsible that they just don't care if they don't pay bills. Maybe they just keep getting away with this kind of thing that it's expected for them from their creditors and they get a shit-ton of more leeway than you or I.yeah, but I bet he's very "cash poor." all his money is in assets and it would look really bad if he dumped a bunch more tesla stock to supplement twitter melting down.
I'm willing to bet he's actually in full blown panic mode while trying so hard to look confident and in control.
I think you're right that he absolutely could pay rent if he really wanted to, but I suspect at least 3 reasons he doesn't. 1) Arrogance. He doesn't expect them to do much about him not paying rent fast. Plenty of rich people are notorious for not paying their bills because who's going to make them?? You basically said as much. 2) Embarrassment. He doesn't want anyone to see he has to liquidate other assets to supplement twitter too much. He wants his fanboi's to think it's doing better than ever! 3) Maybe incompetence? The accountant who was responsible for paying rent was fired along with their whole team... Figuring out how to rectify this might be a bit more complicated than we'd expect.Sure, I agree and pretty much anticipated such a response. What would $139 billion look like to you or me? More than a lifetime, or a dozen. Surely such a person could liquidate at least *some* money to pay rent. I'm done cutting these fucks any slack. It feels like slack (not directed at you or your comment) to allow them to keep getting away with the lamest excuses ever. It has become obscene in relation to the common man.
"I have so much money, but it's tied up in this or that." Yeah? Sell one of your fucking 20 cars, eh? How about one of your yachts? 5th homes? Rich man version of a pawn shop. If you are still living the high life of a billionaire, there's no reason you shouldn't be paying rent.
Just a thought.
