That doesn't even get into some of the other stuff.
There's these space desert dwellers who are a combination of Zen Buddhism and Sunni Islam, but they became the followers of the environmental philosophy an Imperial Planetologist.

There's Space Trucking Guild that gets their powers to navigate their big haulers from the Spice stuff. They may look like wormy fetuses floating in spice gas.

There's these Space Nuns with a latin name, they get their ancestral memory powers from spice. They also have prana-bindu super martial arts and body control and they can control others with their Voice. They somehow get their powers by turning a poisonous derivative of spice non-poisonous in their body. If they fail they die. Also they can only access Female Other Memory, that's why they're trying to breed a male with their abilities. They call him the Kumquat Haagendasz (okay so it's really Kwisatch Haderach), don't worry...there's a glossary in the back of the book! Did you know they issued a pamphlet with info to viewers of the 84 movie to help it make sense. (The expanded version helps with lots of info dump scenes) Oh, and don't do the power-getting thing when you're pregnant, if you do you'll get spooky child Alicia Witt!

Space clones called ghola have the memories their donor had when they died...don't ask how that works, but those memories have to be awakened. The people who make the clones are space muslims...sort of, whose leaders look a bit like Orlok and make clones that can imitate people. They're such patriarchal assholes that their "axolotl tanks" are genetically modified women who are turned into giant wombs. They have a habit of using agents to collect genetic material from anybody important.

And everything is Feudalism instead of some kind of oligarchic capitalism, and Artificial Intelligence is banned! So they have specially trained dudes who drink purple stimulant juice to set their minds in motion do data analysis in their brains, supposedly just as good as computers. Don't ask how that works.

Doctors working for the Feudalistic leaders have supposedly been conditioned to never do harm/turn traitor. Kind of like the Hippocratic Oath...with Brainwashing!

And there's a sequel! Which is thankfully short...the same can't be said for the OTHER sequels. Ignore the prequels of the son, they fuck with shit and retro-actively change shit. I'm calling you out Brian Herbert!

And I'll say again, trying to condense THAT book into a single movie is futile.

Can't wait for the sequel: ⊃∪∩CA∩ I⊃AHO
He DOES play an important part in the sequel and Children of Doon...or more accurately his first ghola does. There's Drunken Omaha gholas in Lord God Help Us another Sequel to Doon and the books further on too.

I think there's a small cadre of Dune fans who believe the books should really be called The Future History of Duncan Idaho

My husband and I enjoyed it. I was super skeptical about Timothee Chalamet, but he grew on me. We never really read the books, but love the 1984 Dune movie. We had to turn out all the lights because the HBO Max version was super dark and difficult to see at times, especially the worm. Also, is it Har-ko-nen, or Har-ka-nin? That was nails-on-chalk board cringe to me every time it was said in the new movie.

Har-koh-nen and it's Chalamet's voice that chalkboards my eardrums but I shall suffer through it to see the movie. eventually. We tend to get around to watching things three-to-five years in arears.

They used to sell "Just another Duncan Idaho ghola." T-shirts at science fiction conventions. Then there were the parody shirts: "Just another drunk in Idaho. Hola!".

It was also super dark and difficult to see at times -even- in the theater.

My playlist of gaming/programming instrumental music includes all but one track from the Toto/Dune soundtrack. As well as most of Tangerine Dream/Legend, Daft Punk/Tron:Legacy and Zimmer/Blade Runner 2049, Bear McCreary/Battlestar Galactica. I can leave them on auto-repeat pretty much indefinitely without tiring of them. :)

I hate to say it, but I was disappointed. I loved the books, and I loved David Lynch's version despite/with all it's flaws. And I really was looking forward to this one. Sure, it had some nice visuals. But to me it was... terribly boring. There was no originality, no intriguing details, and I missed the overwhelming and entertaining weirdness and craziness of the 1984s movie. And to me the characters felt flat, one-dimensional and not very likeable. Or hateable. And it was so dead dead serious. Not that I would have wanted it to be funny - but there was not the slightest bit of (self-) irony, meta or not, not even one witty remark (I think Momoa tries a very very boring joke once, but that's it.) The desert was pretty, but - you couldn't feel the heat. I might be wrong, but I don't even remember any sweat. And somehow they managed that not even the Fremen were mysterious and cool? Hell, not even Momoa was cool. The Shai-Hulud -were- cool, though. Yes, I would have liked to see more of them. Not sure if that's enough to make me watch the sequel, though.

You're not someone who gives credence to the concept of spoilers, are you?

I know I know, the books are decades old. READ YA MORANS!

:hellokitty:
Guilty as charged though I went back and added spoiler tags. The first book is 56 years old, a classic even when I read it in high school. Even the last Frank book, Chapterhouse, is 36 years old. And there was a movie now 37 years old, a miniseries on SyFy now 21 years old... Just Read The Book! Though if you want a quick accessible read, National Lampoon's Doon will get you the basic story.

At least I didn't mention that Paul's pre-born abomination sister Alia becomes a villain, gets possessed by the Other Memory of her maternal Grandfather..Baron Harkonnen (her maternal grandmother is Reverend Mother Gaius Helen mohiam), and has a relationship with the first Duncan Idaho ghola. That's in Children though.

Jopsy Pendragon : two Tangerine Dream Legends tapes wore out and broke before digital music saved the day. I still have the third tape and some kind of big plastic disk in a cardboard sleeve with Tim Curry on the cover.

Sadly, I just found out Frank Herbert was homophobic... To his own son Bruce.

2 miniseries! They also did Children of Dune, which had Dune Messiah smooshed in there as well.

Surprise note: I am sort of a fan of both. James McAvoy played Leto II!

That's unfortunate, but considering how long ago it was, not that surprising. At least it's 'family drama' and 'typical villain queer-coding', unlike Orson Scott Card who was an anti-gay activist, often lending his voice and fame to efforts holding back recognition of LGBTQ+ equality.

Yep, and also unlike a certain TERFy YA fantasy writer from the UK.
