Washington Post: The Greenland ice sheet experienced a massive melting event last week
This could have short-term and long-term implications for sea-level rise.
“When ice from the ice sheet melts, the remaining ice is at lower altitudes and can therefore melt easier. Even if we stopped all emission of greenhouse gases today, the sea level would continue to rise for the next several hundreds of years,” Stendel wrote. “In other words, what happens now has a relevance for the future.”

you think storms are bad now... Just wait..

I've read a total collapse would be pretty devastating, but the current prediction is for less than that. Western Europe would be colder and drier.

What would be the equvalent North American climate? North Dakota? Minnesota/Wisconsin? Maine? Alberta? It's surrounded by enough water that it shouldn't get that dry, but we would certainly have to say goodbye to French, German & Czech wines (although we even do have a smallish vinyard in Minnesota). I'm just making speculations without any real knowledge, other than it will be colder & dryer. I know living mid-continent U.S. we still have pretty decent agriculture despite having a Moscow type climate so it'll be a changed world, not a deathworld, at least in Europe. Taking no bets on anywhere else, though.

On Friday afternoon, that temperature dipped to a brisk 96 degrees. But days earlier, the unprecedented heat rendered Floridia a blindingly bright ghost town, with its bars deserted, its baroque and sand-colored churches darkened, its piazzas emptied.
In the surrounding fields, the area’s famed snails burned in their shells. The relentless sun branded the verdello green lemons with yellow blots and stewed their flesh within. Everyone holed up in their houses. The air-conditioning they blasted prompted blackouts. The digital sign outside the local pharmacy showed an unofficial temperature of 51 Celsius, or nearly 124 Fahrenheit.

Insurance companies in California have taken a staggering blow from wildfires — the industry’s losses in 2017 and 2018 eclipsed its total profits from the previous 25 years — and have started to drop customers by the thousands, leaving wineries and ranches unable to find insurance for properties worth millions of dollars. The state has stepped in to provide a short-term fire insurance solution of last resort, but the crisis foreshadows a larger confrontation over so-called managed retreat in one of the country’s all-important breadbaskets.
