And the kids don't care how St Nicolas and his helpers look, as long as it is fun and there are presents.
Imagine, the last few years St Nicolas wears a bullet proof vest under his clothes during the yearly tv arrival. Most pieten around the good old St Nicolas are dressed up police officers and security people.

as I read
"the horse used to be called Amerigo, but in 2019 Amerigo was "pensioned" (it died) and replaced with a new horse called Oh zo snel ("oh so fast"), after a passage in a well-known Sinterklaas song[3]. In Belgium, it is named Slecht weer vandaag, meaning "bad weather today"[4] or Mooi weer vandaag ("nice weather today").[5]

St Nicolas leaves silently. Nobody knows exactly how.
The evening before his 'birthday' on December 6 he and the pieten bring the presents and then he just leaves.
I think he hates birthdays.

There was a tv episode made for school-tv may years ago, where the pieten asked Sinterklaas what he wanted for his birthday even if it was just for once. A present specialy for him.
And his request was riding Santa's sledge for once.
And that's exactly what happened. Up in the sky with Santa, back home (a very secret home somewhere in Spain).
Who knows, he might do so every year. There are lots of dvd's out there with a copy of that episode.

The original tv Amerigo was pensioned in 2011 already. And yup, he died of old age this year.
