Yeah, that's the tough one either way you cut it. Cats are a major intrusive species with devastating ecological impact. There is no palatable way to remove that threat, and yet allowing cat populations to run unchecked is a horrible outcome, too.

I have one cat (out of 6) that loves having his belly rubbed. He's the one I hand-raised from about 4 weeks of age. There must be a belly-rub window of opportunity.

I rub cat bellies and I'm mellow when they attack me. It's just play. Sometimes they break skin and I go "ow ow ow" and they realize they hurt me and lick my hand in apology and chill out the next time.

They watch everything. This is why I am firmly convinced they are aliens. They don't need to invade because they have already conquered us.

When I was a kid we moved into a new house. We had a big orange cat named George. Well one day a new standard issues cat started to come over and we started feeding him thinking he was a stray. Anyways one day George had enough and just disappeared. We thought he just ran away. So we took in the stray cat since George left and named him Bob.
Fast forward a few months we was chatting with a lady down the street and the topic of cats came up. She said her cat up and disappeared too just like George. And then she bought up that she took in a orange cat not to long thinking it was a stray.
Then it hit us, our 2 cats decided to switch families. Those little bastards

Your cat is a hero. They risked their life to save you. Any botanist can tell that those aren't pepper plants, they are baby Triffids. Now go apologise!
I lost count of how many times Isis saved me from shoe snakes but since her passing, shoelace sales are down.
