Two Republicans fined for bypassing security just days after House approved new penalties

Guess who?

Two Republican House members have been fined $5,000 for bypassing the security screening that was set up outside the House chamber in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, a senior Democratic aide said Friday.

Reps. Louie Gohmert (Tex.) and Andrew S. Clyde (Ga.) appear to be the first members punished under a new rule approved by the House on Tuesday night.
Spokespeople for Gohmert and Clyde did not respond to requests for comment, but Gohmert issued a statement Friday night, explaining that he had stepped out to use the restroom and did not know that he needed to be rescreened on his way back in.
“Unlike in the movie The Godfather, there are no toilets with tanks where one could hide a gun, so my reentry onto the House floor should have been a non-issue,” Gohmert said in the statement.

According to the new rules, lawmakers who bypass the metal detectors that have been installed outside some doors to the House chamber will be fined $5,000 for the first offense and $10,000 for each subsequent offense.
Gohmert called the policy “unconstitutional” and vowed to appeal the fine, citing a portion of the Constitution known as the speech or debate clause that provides lawmakers immunity from arrest for things they say or do during a speech or debate in Congress. The clause is specifically designed to protect the legislative branch from interference by the president or executive branch agencies, and to insulate members from lawsuits and prosecutions based on actions carried out as part of their official duties. It is unclear what if any bearing it would have on Capitol security policies adopted by members themselves.

When I was at school, I remember reading about complaints that medieval monarchs surrounded themselves with wicked counsellors and flatterers, and in Trump we have a perfect example.

It's shameless, and completely cynical, of course, and no worse a grift, I suppose, than the prosperity gospel, I guess, but it just amazes me the faithful go along with it

The Georgia Secretary of State’s Office has opened a formal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the state’s presidential election, officials confirmed Monday, following multiple complaints that Trump’s request that Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger “find” enough votes to flip the race and other efforts violated the law.

Today doesn't seem to be going so well for Trump.

The idea that Vornado might withhold cash flows from the partnership arose recently, the person familiar with the matter said, after the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and unsuccessful attempts last year to sell the buildings for around $5 billion or refinance them. Some banks associated with Trump have also cut their ties to him.

After the riot, reports said some of his tenants in other buildings asked to exit their leases; one was the Girl Scouts of America, in his office building at 40 Wall St. in New York.

Litigation would be likely if Vornado decides to withhold income from Trump generated by the partnership's properties, real estate experts said. But because Trump's other operations aren't doing well, he isn't negotiating from a position of strength.

Trump's heavy debt and his operations' revenue shortfalls put Vornado in a good position to force Trump to take a discounted price for his partnership stake, the person familiar with the matter said.

Even before the Capitol riot, Trump's net worth had plummeted, according to Forbes' billionaire rankings. At the start of his presidency, the magazine estimated his net worth at $3.5 billion; now the estimate is $2.5 billion.
