President Donald Trump and his attorney Rudy Giuliani both mistakenly made calls to Republican Sen. Mike Lee as deadly riots were unfolding at the US Capitol earlier this week, a spokesman for the senator confirmed to CNN -- calls that were intended for another GOP senator the White House was frantically trying to convince to delay the counting of Electoral College votes.

Lee's spokesman said the calls from Trump and his attorney were intended for Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a newly elected Republican from Alabama.

The effort by the White House to get Tuberville to delay certification of the votes provides insight into the President's thinking and priorities as a mob of his supporters lay siege to the iconic building. As the President worked to convince Tuberville to delay the process, he and other top White House officials did little to check in on Vice President Mike Pence while he and members of his family were inside the breached Capitol, a source close to the vice president told CNN.
Sen. Lee's vote: "Hell no!"

Trump Had It All

In the never ending tornado of PR clownery that surrounds Donald Trump, it was easy to forget that behind that daily circus was perhaps the most fortunate man to ever walk this earth. He was brash, he was stupid, and beyond a panache for hyperbole with a side of mobster grift, he wasn’t particularly talented at anything. And yet this fat, balding, ugly, unlikeable bully of a human being found himself dining with the Queen of England, partying with the Kardashians, and spending his nights alternating between beds at the White House and his own private palace, all the while casually tweeting out to his millions of adoring fans while in charge of the world’s largest economy and military.

I mean, invading the Senate while it's in session and the Vice President is there, and brandishing firearms, and then they take selfies and upload the bloody evidence themselves?

Dear God in heaven, what were these people thinking of?
I found that very revealing of some of the factors I've always thought are at play for Trumpists. So many of these people just don't know how the world works.

There is a certain type of stupidity (I don't mean that to be harsh, but I can't think of another term) in which people seem unable to make associations at a conceptual level. They can react to immediate events, they can be trained to do rote tasks, they can read and write, but there's a layer above that is simply missing. This limits their ability to make sense of the world beyond their immediate direct experience.

That ignorance of how things fit together makes the world seem even more dangerous, threatening and chaotic than it is; "bad things" happen to them or people they know and they can't really explain it. This generates considerable anxiety or fear, which in turn makes them vulnerable to conspiracy theories and misinformation: they have no context in which to properly evaluate information. And it's what makes them so vulnerable to authoritarian figures who provide simple solutions.

So here you have people who are provided a ridiculous, inaccurate view of what is happening in their government, who storm the capitol with almost a child's expectation of what they can do about it, and with no self-awareness about how their actions will be perceived by other people. At some level, they are incredibly simple-minded.

Let it be known to the business world: Hire any of Trump’s fellow fabulists above, and Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie. We’re going to scrutinize, double-check, investigate with the same skepticism we’d approach a Trump tweet. Want to ensure the world’s biggest business media brand approaches you as a potential funnel of disinformation? Then hire away.

There's something to be said for "mob mentality", and how the moment can very easily rob you of your critical thinking abilities and seduce you into going with the flow.

But there's also the angle that these guys were sent down there at the command of the President of the United States. The most powerful guy in the country. Some of these people have/had a view of themselves that they were - practically, in fact, if not necessarily legally or by title - agents of the President, others may have merely considered themselves the President's Favored Children; all because that is the language that Trump and his campaign have continuously barraged them with for years. They had complete confident faith that Daddy would protect them from any potential consequences.

And consider too, a lot of these people thought this would work, in the rush of the moment. They'd won. They had the run of the building - at least the first floor, where all the business of both houses take place. They had Nancy Pelosi's office. You heard the lady who had been maced - it was a revolution! Patriots who have won and taken back America for the Greatest President in History don't "face consequences", they mete them.

Once upon a time, way back when, he also told them that he'd 'pay their legal fees' if they somehow got a bit rough. Lies my father told me, or something along that line. For others, it may also be their 15 minutes in the spotlight where they suddenly become a somebody.

I can say that I'm grateful they were unable to get to the representatives. I've seen video of how they treated the press and the first thing that came to my mind as I watched was "mob mentality or rule". They were taking individual pot shots at them. One would come in for an attack then walk away quickly. While the press person was trying to regain balance, another would come in and do the same. Rinse and repeat. In one video, they first shoved him around the crown like a pinball, then they push him off a concrete wall to a landing down below, but if you look closely one man jumps on him right as he was going down, like a scissor move, thus applying his full body weight to him directly before he hit the ground. He could have broken his neck as he was falling backwards.

Had they gotten their hands on a representative, perhaps locked themselves in chambers, god knows what they would have been capable of doing.

This has to be torture for Trump -- at a stroke, he's lost his whole means of communicating directly with his powerbase, his main weapon and one of his main means of boasting and enjoying the adulation of his fans, and of encouraging them to send him money.

Just at the time everything is falling apart for him, this mainstay of his life just vanishes into the air, leaving him helpless and afraid, and all because a few owners of social media companies have flicked a few switches.

It has to be a nightmare for him.
