We should first have a look if these billions a year can be made inside the EU instead of in the UK before Brexit.

From this side of the pond, it looks like everyone -- EU and Britain -- is worse off after Brexit, but all the more reason that the EU needs to put its own interests first to recover as best it can from the blows of the divorce.

This is what people warned would inevitably happen -- that Johnson (and Brexit supporters in general) would soon discover that there's a big difference between negotiating within the EU and negotiating from outside.

Johnson will make a big hullaballoo about this and that for the home market and then grudgingly do what he should have done all along, and comply with the EU's generally very reasonable demands, since he has no other option.

Now things will happen as they happen, and as they have been doing ever since we left the EU.

Johnson's taken back control, and it turns out all that that, just as sometimes freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose, control's just another word for no one left to blame.

Events will take their course, as Johnson and his government carry on, in office but not in control, and not really caring, and we can only watch and wait and hold on tight as we hurtle onwards through the rapids.

Why do they keep thinking they are still entitled to get the same rights in the EU as the EU members do?
The UK had more than one chance to get a far better deal than what they got in the end.

The UK degraded itself from a well respected member to a country somewhere down the line with other countries waiting for painstaking negotiations.

What is so difficult to understand: the UK has decided to leave the EU. Then parts of British society and politics complain that the EU treats the UK as the EU treats non-members.

Of course, treaties can be concluded to mitigate the consequences of Brexit. But such agreements must be negotiated and agreed between the EU and the UK. And the fact that the EU is now somewhat cautious about this after its experiences with the British government, which repeatedly calls into question agreements that have already been negotiated and signed, does not seem to have entered the minds of many Britain-centrists.

Whether this constant pandering to the domestic audience, or more precisely to the Brexit part of the domestic audience, ultimately serves Britain's interests is for the UK electorate to decide. But it doesn't look like that at the moment. The Conservatives may have lost some votes, but they still lead in the opinion polls.
As a European interested in Britain and actually with a lot of sympathy for the UK, one feels only fooled by parts of British politics and society at the moment How much more must the part of the British who were and are not in favour of Brexit feel fooled?

Paul Embery: Pro-Brexit fire union official unfairly sacked, tribunal finds

A firefighter was unfairly dismissed from his union job after speaking at a pro-Brexit rally in Westminster, an employment tribunal has found.
Paul Embery was also barred from being a Fire Brigades Union (FBU) official for two years after appearing at the Leave Means Leave rally in March 2019.
Norwich Employment Tribunal ruled he was unfairly dismissed after a "witch hunt" with a pre-determined outcome.
But it found Mr Embery was not dismissed for supporting Brexit itself.
The FBU said it was disappointed with the findings and that it was assessing its options.
Mr Embery, a prominent left-leaning political activist and writer, was employed by the London Fire Brigade but released to conduct union duties as a full-time regional official in the capital between 2008 and 2019.

The press release isn't clear, but since it does refer to the crew and equipment when talking about the reciprocal deals HMG is still trying to negotiate with the other EU members who haven't yet agreed, it looks to me as if that's part of the package.

We'll find out soon enough, I guess.
