That's the thing. Once the UK left the EU, then the EU does not have to take the UK stance on disputed territories like Gibraltar or Northern Ireland. They are going to give more credit to the positions of Spain and the Republic Ireland at this point. They will always give deference to the positions of member states to the fullest extent possible. It is in the interest of all concerned to keep the peace in Ireland, but the EU will back the RoI and the integrity of the Common Market when those come into conflict.

I'd love to see more non-British shows in the U.S., and I say that as someone who has been steeped in British TV and loved it. But this past year I really enjoyed Norsemen (Norwegian) and currently I'm hooked on Prof. T (Belgian), not to mention my forays into Korean pop culture. There's so much good stuff out there, and I'm looking forward to exploring as more and more of it gets pulled into various streaming services.

Once the UK left the EU, then the EU does not have to take the UK stance on disputed territories like Gibraltar or Northern Ireland.

There's no dispute about the territorial status of Northern Ireland.

That's the subject of the Good Friday Agreement and a treaty between the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and no one wants to change it.

There's a dispute between the UK and the EU about implementing the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement as it relates to imports into NI from the rest of the UK, but that's nothing to do with the territorial status of NI.

The problem now being how to reconcile two irreconcilable agreements, the Good Friday accords and the Brexit agreement. But the main point is that the EU will take the RoI's position as far as possible now that the UK is not a member and will act to preserve the Common Market. They didn't have to pick a side when both were in the EU as the Common Market prevented the problem.

Now it's a dispute between the EU and the UK, in which the EU is trying to protect its own interests, though it will (I hope) pay particular attention to the interests of the RoI in the matter.

I fully expect Johnson will back down, because this isn't something on which the EU will compromise, particularly since it's the first main dispute between the EU and UK, and Johnson's attitude throughout has been completely cynical and irresponsible, and they can't be seen to reward that, even should they wish to.

The EU is to weak in its approach to the UK after Brexit IMO.
The UK left the EU because they did not like it any longer.

No need to give out anything for free at the moment, because friends.
Friends don't leave.

The signed contract is the signed contract.
That is all there is to it. The EU has to toughen up towards the UK.

If the UK wants changes for the better, it has to be beneficial for both sides.
