So, funny thing; some of my british ancestors actually settled in New Netherland.... I think because there was marginally less persecution from the Dutch than from the british..... this was also the branch that owned slaves.... this was more upsetting than any other family tree thing to date. But still, at one point, I guess a branch of my family was actually Dutch, or New Dutch anyways.

UK SUPREME COURT RULES SUSPENSION OF PARLIAMENT WAS UNLAWFUL

Lady Hale, President of the UK Supreme Court, said in her ruling this morning that the prorogation came about in “exceptional circumstances.”

Parliament “has a right to a voice” as to how a rise in its sitting comes about, she added.

She said the effect on democracy of the prorogation was “extreme,” and that no evidence showed why such a long suspension was necessary.

Boris Johnson’s advice to the Queen was “unlawful, void and has no effect,” and so is the prorogation, she said.

“Parliament has not been prorogued,” she added -- a unanimous judgement by all 11 judges.
Holy smoke guys we just watched a history happen.

I mean, we've been doing that this whole time, but this seems a historic ruling independent of the Brexit mess.

Unanimous decision by UK Supreme Court that the prorogation was justiciable and that Johnson's advice to the Queen was unlawful, since its effect was to prevent Parliament carrying out its duties -- Johnson's intent irrelevant.

The unanimity of the judgment is surprising -- a few weeks ago, very few people would have expected the decision to go this way.

[T]he prime minister’s advice to Her Majesty was unlawful, void and of no effect. This means that the order in council to which it led was also unlawful, void and of no effect and should be quashed. This means that when the royal commissioners walked into the House of Lords it was as if they walked in with a blank sheet of paper. The prorogation was also void and of no effect. Parliament has not been prorogued. This is the unanimous judgment of all 11 justices.

It is for parliament, and in particular the Speaker and the Lord Speaker to decide what to do next. Unless there is some parliamentary rule of which we are unaware, they can take immediate steps to enable each house to meet as soon as possible. It is not clear to us that any step is needed from the prime minister, but if it is, the court is pleased that his counsel have told the court that he will take all necessary steps to comply with the terms of any declaration made by this court.

So I guess the question now is, will the reconvened parliament actually move to seize the moment they have been given by the Supreme Court?

Jeremy Corbyn does what was to be expected: demanding Johnson's immediate resignation. I guess a vote of no confidence against BoJo might come up.

HoC seems to be eager to work again:

And never saw this one coming: Farage saying that Dominic Cummings must go.

Jeremy Corbyn says today “A Labour government would want to be held to account. We wouldn’t bypass democracy."
- Going down the Remain route is bypassing democracy. Not respecting the vote back in 2016.

I just wonder what the next general election results will be like ?

Well, Boris Johnson, that’s sound you can hear is the country taking back control, the sound of Parliament being sovereign again.
WHILE STILL IN THE EU!!!

When did we ever lose our sovereignty? Oh... only becasue a few dipshit parliamentarians have bets on us losing our current sovereignty!

Let's wait and see how parliament will waist the extra time created by the court.
There is still no majority for whatever solution in sight.
