  • The building, which contains about 100 apartments, is located one block away from where Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump currently live
How is that an important bullet point to the story? Unless, they think the two had something to do with it?

From a security video that included the fallen building prior to and during the collapse, it appeared to happen in two stages separated by a few seconds. One column of units collapsed leaving an adjacent column swaying for a few seconds, then it, too, collapsed.

That looks like the building foundation gave way. Supposedly no signs of a sinkhole, so I wonder if somehow they were eroded over time?
My guess is something in the foundation was exposed to more water than it should have been and slowly eroded over time... either that or the builder screwed up something BIG.

The article also mentions how some people heard an explosion. This makes me wonder if someone knew how to place very minimal explosives in the right spot in the foundation to make it collapse. This sounds unlikely since that requires a lot of skill and authorities should figure out if there was a bomb fast.

I also feel horrible for anyone in the uncollapsed sections who don't have somewhere else to go on short notice... that would make anyone very anxious. Did the article mention anything about people in the uncollapsed section being evacuated? If so, I missed it.

Given the corrosive rising salt water level beneath Florida, this isn't a stretch at all, which was what I was thinking of in terms of erosion. If that was combined with poor quality control (or outright corruption) of building materials, that would explain the collapse. It would also, one hopes, be an isolated incident. If, however, it's just the weathering, without construction errors, then quite a lot of city buildings may face this fate in the coming years as sea water inevitably continues to rise up from beneath the land.

That was a question at one of the press conferences, and yes, they have been evacuated as well.

A Florida high rise that collapsed early Thursday was determined to be unstable a year ago, according to a researcher at Florida International University.

The building, which was constructed in 1981, has been sinking at an alarming rate since the 1990s, according to a 2020 study conducted by Shimon Wdowinski, a professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Florida International University.

Yes, they have been evacuated - as well as residents in nearby buildings.

To me it looks like the collapses you see when they implode a building. They blow up the columns at the base, and then the rest of building follows by gravity. So I agree with you, something at the bottom failed first.

Given recent hurricanes that went through the area, I would put previous flooding on the suspect list. That could weaken/wash out the soil or foundation, and it just took some time for something to weaken or slide, leading to the collapse.

I watched one of the local TV stations earlier today, and they were evacuating residents from the remaining apartments using fire department ladder trucks, since they don't trust the stability of what's left. They are being taken to a local community center if they don't have friends or family to stay with or need medical attention. The community center is also where concerned people can check if their loved ones are OK.
