Yeah, I know, they are doing the best they can with what they have. I'm just always surprised when top media professionals don't know how 'new media' works.

That being said, I'm pretty sure ABC and NBC could have set them up with studio-quality equipment if they so chose. I mean, it's Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, for crying out loud, not the weatherperson on the local news.

As I said in whichever thread one of our weathermen has a setup now that even includes a green screen. Yes though, they can get them equipment just like a food order can get to them. I did not plan my computers for working from home either [if so, would have designed a better workspace]. My work sent me home with a laptop ... well, more cpu power for rosetta@home than I was already running.

Yeah, they were awesome tonight on the One World Together At Home special. They definitely have quality equipment at home now. If they keep broadcasting from iPhones, it's definitely a creative choice, not out of necessity.

I'm honestly shocked at the One World special tonight. I've been watching streams like this since all this started, and Hollywood productions during the quarantine were always, without exception, a disaster. Laugh Aid is like the Star Wars Christmas Special for millennials, and last week, Saturday Night Live was a cringe fest. Most of the enjoyment I get out of these things is hanging out with a half dozen friends on discord, and mercilessly ripping on the performers. I know, I'm a bad person... whatever, at least I'm giving them eyeballs. So we were all ready tonight with our little digital Statler and Waldorf chat on discord, and then the show started, and Lady Gaga was actually good. Then Stevie Wonder, then Paul McCartney came on, and by that point, we were all enjoying it so much, we realized we couldn't go ahead with our normal peanut gallery routine. It was all just so good.

I think Hollywood is learning.

That isn't happening where I live. My next door neighbor and a house across the street both are gang controlled drug house, I believe by the same gang. They have had and continue to have drinking parties in the street with 20+ people and continue dealing. Two nights ago there was a drive-by shooting aimed at the one across the street. It's not the first time that particular house has had a drive-by shooting. One man was shot in the head, the other the chest. Needless to say I dropped to the floor.

Last night the house next door called in 30+ of their best fellow gang members and had a screaming match in front of the house that had been the target of the shooting and over a distance of at least half the block. They then congregated in the street, in front of my house on the sidewalk and a number of others, drinking and, I suppose, plotting their revenge. The police must have been called as I saw a squad drive down the street slowly and they didn't even stop let alone disperse them. This went on for hours.

It's not only the US where an incompetent and lazy Head of Government may have cost lives with his complacency, inertia and incompetence, it seems:

Michael Gove has conceded that Boris Johnson missed five consecutive emergency meetings in the buildup to the coronavirus crisis, and that the UK shipped protective equipment to China in February.

The government faced intense pressure on Sunday over its initial response the pandemic, as Labour accused Johnson of having been “missing in action” during the crucial weeks when the virus first arrived in the UK.

Gove initially insisted a Sunday Times story detailing failures during this period had numerous inaccuracies and would be corrected.

The five meetings Johnson missed came during a period in February where he spent an entire parliamentary recess out of sight at his official country retreat of Chequers, prompting Labour to accuse him at the time of being a “part-time prime minister”.

The Sunday Times quoted one unnamed senior adviser as saying Johnson “didn’t work weekends”, and “there was a real sense that he didn’t do urgent crisis planning”.

The choice was never between a deadly dash for “herd immunity” and the great lockdown. The choice was, and remains, between excessively costly and affordable containment of the contagion until we understand it well enough to control it with vaccination and effective therapy. The east Asian democracies, along with Israel and the smarter north European countries, are showing that there is a way to avoid economic lockdowns by mass testing and tech-enabled contact-tracing. The problem is that neither Britain nor America seems anywhere close to either, even as the political pressure mounts, especially in Republican states, for a return to work.

What that means, I fear, is that we may end up with the worst of both worlds: enough lockdowns to condemn us to economic depression, but not enough to avert a much higher level of mortality than we are ready for.

Yes, it's surprising how many stable democracies somehow manage perfectly well despite their citizens lacking the constitutional right to join extremist armed militias and slouch around town with their firearms.

When first I saw those photos, I started to think about what crimes those guys would be committing were they in the UK -- both firearms and public order offences -- for which they'd be facing decades in prison, and I'm so glad I live here and not in Michigan.
