Yes, and the three day Notting Hill Carnival in London regularly attracts between one and two million visitors every year, but it's not the same as state fairs, since it's not competing with local carnivals all over the rest of the country.
Well, Washington DC's metropolitan area has a population of over six million. They could have increased the visitor numbers by adding a one-time regional holiday before July 4th.

But since the metropolitan area extends into Maryland and Virginia, this is easier said than done.

It also would have increased the number of non-white visitors at the event, which they didn't want.

It’s a truly Trumpian tragedy: he’s made billions of dollars but can’t buy love or respect

He's clearly trying to prove something to himself (and to his late father?). On the face of it he has everything he wants -- wealth, power -- but despite all this he's desperate for praise, reassurance and adulation, and has to fill up the empty hours at night when sleep eludes him by rage-posting and reposting self-soothing flattery, presumably because he knows that he's so widely hated and despised and that he's empty inside.

Same for Musk.

Sorry Trump/Musk, daddy will never love you.

For allies and adversaries alike, America at 250 is a solid global citizen gone rogue -- interesting round-up of how traditional allies, partners and rivals see Trump's US and their relationship with it.

ETA: and a more idiosyncratic view

It’s not going well. There are many definitions of failure, but Vanilla Ice has historically been the most widely accepted. In cultures across the world and in different eras, Vanilla Ice has functioned as one of the key metrics for decline, the gold standard measurement for what happens when you’re a gurning cunt.

The ancient Egyptians used to feature him on the inside of a Pharaoh’s tomb. The Normans stitched images of him looming over the battle scenes in the Bayeux Tapestry. It is a rule as old as time: If your country is relying on Vanilla Ice to save its national reputation, then something has gone horribly wrong.
Now he has come again, like Halley’s Comet, to inflict a devastating moment of humiliation on America’s 250th birthday. The problem began when the artists who had been booked to perform at the celebrations realised what was happening. What had been presented to them as an event for the country as a whole was in fact a piece of idol-worship for an insane president.

Most of what I know of state fairs comes from my friend in Massachusetts, but since she tends to return from their state fair muttering about her theory that overindulgence in deep-fried foods affects both intelligence and DNA, and how this explains a lot about the western parts of the Commonwealth, I'm not sure she's a completely unbiased informant.
You haven't lived until you've eaten a stick of deep fried butter smothered in ranch dressing.

Most fairs are held in the fall, but not all. The county fair in neighboring Kings County was held last month. I don't know the exact reason, but I suspect it's to avoid competing head-on with the Tulare County and the much larger Fresno County fairs, which are held in September and October, respectively.

It's almost poetic that you won't live long after, either....

English legal commentator David Allen Green on US vs English views on executive power

Evernote Link

Recent judgments of the US Supreme Court, especially this week in the case of Trump v Slaughter, have upheld sheer executive power. This is the sort of legal brute force at which even George III would have blanched—perhaps even Henry III. The point here is not that the executive can act outside the law, but that the law is that the executive can do as it wishes.

American law does NOT uphold extreme executive power. These recent Supreme Court decisions run contrary to every thought and intention of the founding fathers. The conservatives on SCOTUS are betraying our democratic republic by deliberate misinterpretation of those laws because they have an undemocratic agenda. They have ceased to believe in "all the people" and have thrown their lot in with a very small elite group of people who want to rule the world.

Yes, and David Allen Green is making the point that the Supreme Court's attempts to use English common law to interpret the Constitution are based on a massive misapprehension:

Some would doubt that the US Supreme Court has a fair and accurate understanding of the English common law basis of the US constitution. It sometimes seems that paragraphs of Blackstone’s commentaries are selected in the same way that some people select biblical verses to justify preconceived ideas.
