Yeah I've never quite understood that either.

There is still another non-military uniformed service in America, the NOAA commissioned officer corps, which does weather, oceanography, and surveying work. They have navy ranks too but, at least they work primarily on ships so it makes a little sense. The public health service? I don't get it.

The UK is considering following Australia in banning access to social media for under-16s.

To my mind, objections that bans can be circumvented miss the point. They can be, but only at the expense of breaking the business model that directs particular types of content at the group that's circumventing them. That is, the targets of a ban are as much the social media companies as under-16s.

That is a good point. Since by evading the ban the teenagers would surface to the social media companies and their data tracking as adults, they wouldn't be served the kinds of problematic content that those companies are intentionally targeting at teens.

North Carolina Republicans propose constitutional amendment criminalizing seeking an abortion

House Bill 1232, introduced on 13 May 2026 by Republican Representatives Keith Kidwell and Ben T. Moss Jr., would amend Article I of the North Carolina Constitution to declare that 'a distinct and separate human life begins at the moment of fertilisation.'

The bill grants every person the right to use deadly force to defend 'the life of another person' from 'wilful destruction', a provision that, combined with the bill's murder classification for abortion, would legally permit a third party to kill a woman seeking an abortion in the name of self-defence.

Not only that but due to the proposed wording of the law, a bystander who witnesses the vigilante trying to kill the pregnant woman in order to protect her fetus is in turn allowed to try to kill the attacker in order to protect the pregnant woman. And so is a second bystander who attacks the first bystander in order to save the life of the vigilante...in theory this law would support a communal chain-reaction mass-murder event where no participant (who survives) can be charged with anything.
