When biologist James Watson died on Thursday at age 97, it brought down the curtain on 20th-century biology the way the deaths of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson on the same day in 1826 (July 4, since the universe apparently likes irony) marked the end of 18th-century America. All three died well into a new century, of course, and all three left behind old comrades-in-arms. Yet just as the deaths of Adams and Jefferson symbolized the passing of an era that changed the world, so Watson’s marks the end of an epoch in biology so momentous it was called “the eighth day of creation.”

Franklin returned to work in January 1958 and was also given a promotion to Research Associate in Biophysics on 25 February. She fell ill again on 30 March and died a few weeks later on 16 April 1958 in Chelsea, London, of bronchopneumonia, secondary carcinomatosis, and ovarian cancer. Exposure to X-ray radiation is sometimes considered to be a possible factor in Franklin's illness.

Dear Brilliant Geniuses,

The only way to ban "chemtrails" from skies over your state is to ban airplanes from flying over your state. Because what you believe are "chemtrails" is just made up conspiratorial nonsense about contrails.

Honestly, I was fibbing a little when I said you've have to stop airplanes from flying over your state to "ban" them. Technically, you can "ban" "chemtrails" while still allowing airplanes to fly over your state, and there are actual, good reasons to try and curtail the occurrence of contrails (though you'll probably think those reasons are too woke). But you'll have to force airplanes to only fly over at times when weather conditions are the most ideal for NOT forming contrails.

In either case, if you do succeed in stopping "chemtrails," I hope your state enjoys the loss of the most modern form of transportation.

Your in condensation,

If I was anything but a purely regional airline, I suspect I'd have to give a good hard think to flying into SC airspace at all if this passes. I doubt it is a big enough market to risk the hassle and expense of being a test case for these idiots and it is small enough one could easily bypass it.

Makes you realise how strong a social element there is to scientific knowledge -- even though individual professionals raised questions early on about the mathematics behind the research, because of the researcher's position and reputation, and because of institutional self-protection and inertia, it took chance conversations at professional conferences and years of work by individual campaigners to overturn very flawed research that's still regarded in many places as scientific and legal orthodoxy, on the strength of which people have been wrongly convicted and imprisoned.

Failed supernova provides clearest view yet of a star collapsing into a black hole
Astronomers have watched a dying star fail to explode as a supernova, instead collapsing into a black hole. The remarkable sighting is the most complete observational record ever made of a star's transformation into a black hole, allowing astronomers to construct a comprehensive physical picture of the process.

Combining recent observations of the star with over a decade of archival data, the astronomers confirmed and refined theoretical models of how such massive stars turn into black holes. The team found that the star failed to explode as a supernova at the end of its life; instead, the star's core collapsed into a black hole, slowly expelling its turbulent outer layers in the process.

The results, published in Science, are already generating excitement as a rare glimpse into the mysterious origins of black holes. The discovery will help explain why some massive stars turn into black holes when they die, while others don't.
RIP, M31-2014-DS1. Although you died - or collapsed down into a black hole, practically the same thing in stellar circles - 2.5 million years ago.

Uhhhhh....

I like it, but, "gluing (?) some wood panels to an aluminum frame with aluminum spreaders inside does not really match my mental picture of 'traditional Japanese joinery,'" which the article claims was used.

Still cool, though.

There’s the making of an origin movie in there somewhere.

Whoa, cool.

Antimatter has been transported for the first time ever — in the back of CERN’s truck
Antimatter is matter’s equal and opposite. If the two meet, they annihilate each other, turning entirely into energy. This makes it incredibly difficult to store or move antimatter.

On 24 March, a team at CERN, the European particle-physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland, transported 92 antiprotons in a specially designed bottle that traps the particles using magnetic fields. The bottle travelled on the back of a truck, taking a 30-minute journey around the lab’s site.
The experiment’s ultimate goal is to take the antiparticles to a location free of experimental noise, where antiprotons can be studied with greater precision than is possible in the CERN ‘antimatter factory’ where they are created.
So 92 antiprotons isn't much at all to sneeze at, but I'm having a tiny nerdgasm over the idea of an "antimatter factory."

Next time a guy asks for a map...

Scientists mapped all the nerves of the clitoris for the first time
New research offers a closer look at one of the least-studied organs in the human body: the clitoris, the structure responsible for female sexual pleasure.

Once described by a 16th-century anatomist as the "shameful member," the clitoris has historically been ignored in research in part due to taboo. Additionally, dissecting clitoral nerve tissue is challenging due to its position in relation to the surrounding pelvic organs.
In recent decades, MRI studies have characterized the overall structure of the clitoris. But only now have researchers captured clitoral nerves in three dimensions and at micron-scale resolution, thanks to an X-ray that uses an extremely bright light source called a synchrotron.

What, they haven't invented a space wank sock yet? Seems like a no-brainer.

Put it in the pee eject tube.

Could give a whole new meaning to "black gloryhole." (Don't search for that on Google.)
You can't tell me what to do!
