When biologist James Watson died on Thursday at age 97, it brought down the curtain on 20th-century biology the way the deaths of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson on the same day in 1826 (July 4, since the universe apparently likes irony) marked the end of 18th-century America. All three died well into a new century, of course, and all three left behind old comrades-in-arms. Yet just as the deaths of Adams and Jefferson symbolized the passing of an era that changed the world, so Watson’s marks the end of an epoch in biology so momentous it was called “the eighth day of creation.”

Franklin returned to work in January 1958 and was also given a promotion to Research Associate in Biophysics on 25 February. She fell ill again on 30 March and died a few weeks later on 16 April 1958 in Chelsea, London, of bronchopneumonia, secondary carcinomatosis, and ovarian cancer. Exposure to X-ray radiation is sometimes considered to be a possible factor in Franklin's illness.

Dear Brilliant Geniuses,

The only way to ban "chemtrails" from skies over your state is to ban airplanes from flying over your state. Because what you believe are "chemtrails" is just made up conspiratorial nonsense about contrails.

Honestly, I was fibbing a little when I said you've have to stop airplanes from flying over your state to "ban" them. Technically, you can "ban" "chemtrails" while still allowing airplanes to fly over your state, and there are actual, good reasons to try and curtail the occurrence of contrails (though you'll probably think those reasons are too woke). But you'll have to force airplanes to only fly over at times when weather conditions are the most ideal for NOT forming contrails.

In either case, if you do succeed in stopping "chemtrails," I hope your state enjoys the loss of the most modern form of transportation.

If I was anything but a purely regional airline, I suspect I'd have to give a good hard think to flying into SC airspace at all if this passes. I doubt it is a big enough market to risk the hassle and expense of being a test case for these idiots and it is small enough one could easily bypass it.

Makes you realise how strong a social element there is to scientific knowledge -- even though individual professionals raised questions early on about the mathematics behind the research, because of the researcher's position and reputation, and because of institutional self-protection and inertia, it took chance conversations at professional conferences and years of work by individual campaigners to overturn very flawed research that's still regarded in many places as scientific and legal orthodoxy, on the strength of which people have been wrongly convicted and imprisoned.
