It's not the Army. It's the Marines.
The National Guard is a reserve component of the U.S. Army and Air Force. And Trump sent them into California, as well.

So, nyah.

Albanese's response to targeting of Australian reporter

Sorry guys, I havent posted here in a long time so have forgotten how you do your links. If this hasn't made your news, well, it has over here, as well as in many parts of the world. The original footage is easy to find, so instead I'm posting our PMs response which may be less accessible. An Australian reporter was deliberately targeted by US police while doing her job at the LA protests.

I know you're just being silly, but I've seen some soldiers get really pedantic about these terms for real. The terms "army" and "soldier" predate the modern divisions into the different branches. It is kind of funny when Marines insist they are not also "soldiers" lol.

US Marines vs Royal Marines and the Netherlands Marine Corps (both of whom are most certainly part of their respective countries' navies)

ETA From what I read, a more accurate comparison between US forces and what I (and, I suspect, Dutch people, too) understand by the term "Marines" would be with US Navy Seals.

And any time you try to discuss anything with MAGAts online they make this kind of stupid distinction as if the branch of service is the main point.

The point I was making was that the distinction between "sending the army" versus the Marines wasn't important in this case.

Also, I disagree with your comparisons. In the US (not sure about UK) Marines are mostly separate from the Navy though they do have some cross over things like medals they award.

Also, No, A regular Marine is not at all comparable to a US Navy SEAL. I've seen others make that comparison, but it's very wrong. The term "Marine" in the US refers to an entire branch of service and includes some non combat troops. Meanwhile, the US Navy SEALs are specifically a special operations group. The Marines have special ops but not every marine is close to being one. It's a lot harder to get into the SEALs than it is to get most of the roles in the Marines.

Uhhh... Not to drift too far into military minutiae, nor from the real point of US armed forces being deployed on US soil, but the USMC is part of the Department of the Navy.

No, i meant our Royal Navy Marines are more like your US Navy SEALS (specially trained amphibious combat troops). The US Marines are more like one of our Army divisions.

One of the reasons for the US Marines' existence was originally to defend ships at sea from boarders. Later, to defend our embassies. They were converted into mostly-combat roles by the war with Mexico ('thus the "Halls of Montezume". They earned their reputation in the Pacific during WW2.

This. Navy SEALS go through training that would wash out the majority of regular troops. I don't know their washout rate, but it's surprisingly high. To be fair, though, some of the Marines in question who were shipping to CA were ForceRecon which is another subdivision for specially trained men. They're not SEALS, but they're tough.

Organizationally, you are correct. I'm doing a thought exercise about what would happen if I walked up to a bunch of Marines and said they reminded me of army troopers.

I'd stand back :)

I think you'd be safer if you just called them any number of other bad names I'll not put in writing, lol.

They have like a 70-80% drop out rate and that is among the people who passed their very difficult physical standards, that most troops couldn't pass anyway.

You're also correct that Recon is a big step harder to get into than most Marine roles.

Sorry, misread you. I'll take your word on the Royal Navy Marines since my sources are far more US specific. I just looked it up and it seems you're likely right since there are not that many Royal Marines.

I doubt, "Hi, sailors" would be good, either.

More seriously, the choice to send Marines was a choice to threaten serious violence, and I think pretty much every USanian understands that. No one sends Marines to be peacekeepers. You send Marines to kill the enemy and secure the beachhead.

Basically, the US just declared war on those who dare to disagree with Project 2025.

Also by number of aircraft the USMC has the 7th biggest air force in the world.

It doesn't really matter so which branch of the army is being send. Any state who is sending parts of its army to trample down legal protests is using parts of the totalitarian playbook, and on the way to become an autocracy.

It's something you would expect Kim Jong-Un to do or Vladimir Putin.

But I do agree sending the Marines is taking this to next level by sending a message "We mean business." It's just emphasizing that the orange man baby in the Oval Office is hell bent in solidifying his grip over the state, eliminating human rights and the system of checks and balances.

The next escalation level would be sending tanks to roll over the protesters, like the Chinese government did on Tianmen square in 1989 or the USSR in Prague in 1968.

The expectation of a good, well educated democratic army is to reject such anti-constitutional orders when they come. Question is and we are unfortunately going to see sooner or later how much this is true for the US Armed Forces with all branches.

I mean it's due to this that bringing the army on your side is a major building block for every would be dictator to solidify your power.
