I bought a second box, because I couldn’t bring myself to open the one I had to taste it. :hamster:
She opened hers yesterday, she didn't like it. Sadface.

I made soup in the slow cooker using navy beans and after 8 hours, they’re still a tad crunchy. Recipe said 6-8 on low. Damn it. Must have been older beans… really pisses me off. From now on, no matter what, I’m going to soak them over night.

Crunchy beans are okay. Someone has to monitor me on shelling duty because I will eat too many. "Is it done yet" seems meaningless to me when we're talking about something that can be eaten raw.

If you don't have a pressure cooker, soak overnight but if they are older beans they can still come out a little crunchy. What you can do, is not add salt until the beans are cooked through and also add a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to the beans while they are cooking. This will soften them so they are not crunchy. I have no idea how long stores are keeping things like beans in warehouse storage or on the shelf but I've bought a lot of "older beans" off the store shelf lately. I make my red beans and rice about once a week so it's not like they sit on my shelf.

I heard salt making beans crunchy was a myth, but many swear by it. My water is a little hard, so that may be why (along with how old they were). I think I’ll just buy canned ones now, frankly. It’s not like I’m cooking for a family.

Some high-protein foods, like meat prepared with saturated fat, may be considered junk food.
I suspect the goal is to focus on food products prepared with high levels of saturated fats. A McDonald's Hamburger and a steak cooked on ones grill are not the same.

It's not the protein that's the problem. It's the fats, additional salt, and all the additives they're worried about.
Protein supplements are also very overrated as a health food, but that's a whole different topic! It's also worth mentioning plenty of candy bars try to pretend they are "protein bars" because they contain a few grams of extra protein.

My doctors recommended the "breakfast" drinks like Boost, Ensure or Carnation Breakfast Essentials (which I prefer) after my surgeries last year, and it definitely improved and maintains my A/G levels.

That's great! And that is definitely a special case. I was more thinking of how silly it is when healthy people who eat tons of meat also take a protein supplement they don't need.

Over here in the US, my insurance gives me some money for healthy food. I think the only thing they are concerned about is high sugar content. So cake, ice cream, cookies and so on are out. Oddly, a box of sugar is fine. Most other food is in if it is a bar code their system recognizes. Unfortunately, they don't recognize in store printed bar codes or no bar code so that eliminates most fresh meat, fish and vegetables.

Ditto.

Are sloppy joes not simply meat based oatmeal?
Not quite, generally just meat, sauce, spices, some minced veggies, but no oatmeal

Chili on the other hand often does have oatmeal.
