Microsoft had smartphones before Apple and Google, and they started out pretty good, running Windows CE and efficiently managing resources on hundred-megahertz processors in 2002. They actively worked to make them worse over the next decade and change, locking them down into a closed silo, and then rebooted into a Windows NT based platform that was truly awful because they were trying to take lessons from Apple and Google instead of doing more of what they had already been doing right.

I wouldn't write off a Muskphone because in a certain way he is like the opposite of Microsoft.

Microsoft has an anti-fan problem. I think Microsoft's phones were never going to really gain decent market share no matter what, because they have a huge contingent of anti-fans who will not buy something just because Microsoft made it, even if it manages to be something quite good.

With Musk it's the other way around. He has a whole personality cult who will gleefully buy anything he makes just because he's the one who made it, even if it is like objectively the very worst possible product in its class that you could buy. And while I can't see a Muskphone gaining anything close to a dominant market share, his cult is large enough - especially lately after his political coming-out - that it wouldn't be a failure, necessarily.

Well, Musk would just need to brand it right. Tesla as phone brand would also probably come with big prestige. And then the right name: Freedom Phone!

Since this is at the moment taken by a right wing nut, which suddenly are feeling quite cuddly with Musk, that should be not a big problem of getting the name rights.

And of course it needs to be really visually striking: with the star spangled banner everywhere, and such. And then it just takes his buddy DeSantis to use it before a camera.

Musk has a personality cult. But he does not have a business cult.

To launch a new phone, you need an app store. That store has to have all of the major social media, communications, entertainment, and game apps. He would need to convince a large number of app developers after he has burned down Twitter that his followers would be a large enough market segment to be worth developing new versions of their apps for. Shoveling money at an Android fork may get him a few units sold, but it didn't work in the long run for Amazon or Microsoft, and they put actual effort into it.

Remeber when both Microsoft and Amazon, teo of the biggest monsters in tech, tried making phones and app stores not reliant on Google and Apple and both failed?

Pepperidge Farms Remebers.
IXNAY! I'm working on brokering a deal to sell this fruit-brained chump Mr. Musk MS's phone business. Here's a pic:

It's a fixer-upper!

Elon Musk was born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth, because his father Errol owned an emerald mine.

As Errol Musk puts it: As a result of this, the teenage Elon Musk once walked the streets of New York with emeralds in his pocket. His father said: “We were very wealthy. We had so much money at times we couldn’t even close our safe,” adding that one person would have to hold the money in place with another closing the door. “And then there’d still be all these notes sticking out and we’d sort of pull them out and put them in our pockets.”

Musk using the death of one of his children to justify upholding the ban on Alex Jones despite inviting other scumbags back on the platform.

But it was actually his ex-wife who held the kid in her arms.
