de Tocqueville praised the availability of a free education as one of the important aspects of the American system that set it apart and a vital part of what makes democracy possible. (Irony alert) He also discussed the history of free public education noting that it was a tradition that came from the Puritans who saw it as a fundamental and necessary practice because they felt it was important that people be able to read and understand the bible.
