Because money and the internet are involved.

There's a reason I sold all my bitcoins in the previous price bubble and have stayed away like its a toxic nuclear waste dump. I got in in the early days, when it was an interesting experiment, like Linden Dollars, but traded worldwide, and not just in Second Life. In fact, I bought some of my earliest bitcoins *with* Linden Dollars. But it got weirder and scammier as the amounts of money got larger, and governments were slow to understand it and regulate it.

Unfortunately most people in Russia and Belarus who are using a VPN are probably doing it to get news and information outside of official channels. I am all for hacking the Russian government and industrial systems, but this is potentially targeting people who are trying to get unfiltered info.

Cross-posting this with the Ukraine War thread, because it's related there, but can be a serious issue for anyone using a service that uses a VPN that routes through either of those countries.

Sabotage: Code added to popular NPM package wiped files in Russia and Belarus | Ars Technica
It was on an early release channel and the dev IIRC announced it was a protest hack, and so very few were effected. It never reached a stable release channel and probably never will.

Well... prices are in decline, yes. But at the same time prices are still much much higher than the recommended selling price by their manufacturers. So at the end of the day Joe Average Gamer will still most likely back off from buying new GPUs right now.

To give some numbers:

RTX3090: still 32% more than USP
RX6900 XT: 19% more
RTX3080: 49% more
RX6800XT: 45% more
RTX3070: 57% more
RX6700 XT: 47% more
RTX3060: 61% more
RX6600XT: 31% more
GT1650: 53% more

And we are near the end of the life of Nvidia 3XXX, so usually prices would go lower than USP very soon. But times are still not normal.

Stephen Wilhite, one of the lead inventors of the GIF, died last week from COVID at the age of 74, according to his wife, Kathaleen, who spoke to The Verge. He was surrounded by family when he passed. His obituary page notes that “even with all his accomplishments, he remained a very humble, kind, and good man.”
In his honor, everyone please pronounce it JIF until April.

If you go back to the original Norse palatization of the "GI" sound in words like "gift", it's pronounced "YIF" or "IF", by Yiminy!

I suppose jpeg should be pronounced jfeg since the p stands for photographic.

You want to hear something funny? Nothing that happened here is illegal until someone tries to cash out the stolen assets.

Yeah - like, if someone wasn't interested in financial gain but just wanted to troll some cryptobros, they could steal millions in "whatevercoin" and NFTs, leave it all in some purgatory cryptowallet and never touch it, and they wouldn't even be arrested.

It'll make the remaining coins more valuable if they steal and lock away enough supply. De Beers does that with diamonds. Goldfinger does it by irradiating the USA gold supply at Fort Knox.

Guitar amp enthusiasts have been concerned that vacuum tubes will no longer be available since they are largely made in Russia. (omg!) No worries. Western Electric is going to start making them again.

The other day, through no input of mine, I ended yp watching The Brave Little Toaster Returns on Disney+.

Part of the plot involved an ancient computer that needed a replacement tube at ine point that they could only find in the Radio.

The radio found another one, along with a rat, and then the pair got in an argument and accidentally broke the last tube (aside from the one in Radio).

In an extremely morbid moment, everyone else (Toaster, Lamp, Blanket) berate radio over this bungle, which causes Radio to quietly walk off screen, and commit suicide. His tube comes rolling into the screen, and they discover his body behind a box.

Also later a computer has an orgasm.

It was a pretty fucked up movie for a kids movie honestly.

If the ancient computer uses tubes it probably goes through half a dozen a day so it's going to need another one in a couple of hours.
