There's something to be said for "mob mentality", and how the moment can very easily rob you of your critical thinking abilities and seduce you into going with the flow.

But there's also the angle that these guys were sent down there at the command of the President of the United States. The most powerful guy in the country. Some of these people have/had a view of themselves that they were - practically, in fact, if not necessarily legally or by title - agents of the President, others may have merely considered themselves the President's Favored Children; all because that is the language that Trump and his campaign have continuously barraged them with for years. They had complete confident faith that Daddy would protect them from any potential consequences.
Remember that out of the 74 million who voted for Trump, these were the thousands who paid their own way to go to D.C. They were the hard-core cultists. A number of them were already well-known in MAGA circles, like the Viking horns guy. I don't think they were convinced in the moment. They were convinced long before they arrived that they were going to "take back the country".

It's sad that I know how that scene begins without ever seeing the movie. "The russians are advancing here and here? "where's steiner, he'll stop them"... "Mein Fuhrer...Steiner...." "Steiner couldn't make it, he couldn't muster enough troops." glasses pull. "Keitel, Jodl, Krebs, Burgdof, you guys stay, the rest of you bugger off. DAS WAR EIN BEFEHL!
But there wasn't enough ORANGE. And they should have deepfaked Melania's face over Eva's and put Kayleigh McEnery's and Sarah Huckabee's face over Traudl's and the woman next to her.
From all reports inside the White House, Daddy was pissed off that his rioting supporters looked so low-class.
Some of them just "looked" "low-class". Intentionally trying to portray a "rugged rednecky masculinity" even though they were lawyers, or CEO's or retired colonels. Or some real estate agent with instagram fashion blogger looks who flew in on a private plane trying to pass her self off as "common folk"

So what’s the parallel in the dark arts of communication? Simple: Don’t let the chronic liars cash in on their dishonesty. Press secretaries like Joe Lockhart, Ari Fleischer and Jay Carney, who left the White House with their reputations in various stages of intact, made millions taking their skills — and credibility — to corporate America. Trump’s liars don’t merit that same golden parachute. Let it be known to the business world: Hire any of Trump’s fellow fabulists above, and Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie. We’re going to scrutinize, double-check, investigate with the same skepticism we’d approach a Trump tweet. Want to ensure the world’s biggest business media brand approaches you as a potential funnel of disinformation? Then hire away.

Still, the new reality for Trump is messy. Frank Luntz, a veteran GOP pollster, conducted a focus group the night after the Capitol attack with 12 Trump voters from 11 different states. He said they fell into three camps: those who believe the fact that President-elect Joe Biden won the election and think it’s time Trump move on; those who think it was stolen from Trump but he still should move on; and those who think it was stolen and Trump should continue to fight.

Luntz was flabbergasted by the sharp, even angry tone of the discussion.

“They were very emotional with each other, very harsh with each other,” he said. “This has never happened in a Trump focus group I’ve done. … Trump voters are like single moms with kids. They back each other, they empathize with each other, because they know the stresses and strains they each have. Not anymore. These Trump voters are ready to declare war with each other.”

A long, interesting piece in the NYT Magazine from the author of On Tyranny.

When Donald Trump stood before his followers on Jan. 6 and urged them to march on the United States Capitol, he was doing what he had always done. He never took electoral democracy seriously nor accepted the legitimacy of its American version.

Even when he won, in 2016, he insisted that the election was fraudulent — that millions of false votes were cast for his opponent. In 2020, in the knowledge that he was trailing Joseph R. Biden in the polls, he spent months claiming that the presidential election would be rigged and signaling that he would not accept the results if they did not favor him. He wrongly claimed on Election Day that he had won and then steadily hardened his rhetoric: With time, his victory became a historic landslide and the various conspiracies that denied it ever more sophisticated and implausible.
